The Dark Knight Rises: Bat Darts....

Hello,

I was wondering what people thought of the tiny, elongated batarangs from the film. I would love to see someone produce some.

(This is not a thread to discuss what you thought of the film, that is in the movie discussion forum. Let's keep it civil.)

Well I thought that the film...just kidding! I was wondering when the bat dart thread was going to pop up. I think the darts would make great olive skewers in martinis lol

We never got a look at what they came out of. Gun or Bat Blowgun?

I am definitely going to make some, I just haven't decided out of what. They are pretty simple. I was thinking of cutting them out of aluminum, but that's a lot of work. More likely I will make one out of aluminum and make a mold to make them out of resin.

I haven't really decided yet. I have a Batman prop obsession, I have made props from all the movies and some from the games and comics. I like to try to do things non generic batarang because I like the other more interesting gadgets.

Here is a rough prototype out of ABS plastic. It is approximately 2.875 inches by 0.375. Working that small is very difficult. I am thinking of increasing the size for practicality.

I worked on this some more today. I decided to double the size of the first one because it felt way too small. The new ones are 5 inches by 0.75 inches. They feel like the right size for throwing.

I made another plastic one and it definitely came out better, but the increase in size made making an aluminum one possible. It's a lot of work to make these so I will probably make a mold of the "hero" one and make a bunch of resin "stunt" ones for my display. The aluminum one has not been painted black yet. I kind of like the look of the raw aluminum.

Here's a picture, take a look...

while it may be easier to make the larger version, i think the scale you had for the original one was correct, i saw the movie last night and they really are tiny :p itd probably be more practical to get it 3d printed, wouldnt cost much as its so small anyways :)

I keep messing with this trying to get the carving (for lack of a better word) "right". Here is the latest attempt. I scaled it down to 4 inches by 0.5 inches. The piece definitely looks a lot better carving wise.

I'm going to wait a day and see if I still like it, then I'll make a mold. I think it looks pretty good. I really can't make it any smaller without sacrificing the quality of the bat shape.

Here is a picture of it with a ruler and with me holding it to give some size perspective.

By the way... If you really want a throw-able version I think it would have to be surgical stainless steel. Aluminum is too light. Being so small you need something like stainless to give it some weight for throwing. I say surgical stainless because you want it to be safe if you cut your self (the make needles and scalpels out of it).

I still keep messing with this. I made a small one in aluminum... actually I made two. The first one wasn't very good, but the second one is pretty good.

This one is 0.375 inches by 3.0 inches. At this point it is unpainted aluminum

This one is just too small to make many of them. It's also too small to make a decent mold and produce them. I have one that is slightly bigger that I may mold (0.5 inches by 3.75 inches).
