The Big Bang Theory returns tonight !

Love the show, however, this ep, as with most other returning sitcoms, seemed a bit off the mark. A first day returning to school odness about it.
Sheldon and his date was the best part. Sadly, the robot arm went to low brow territory.

there's a slight glitch in the audio about half way through that clip, plus the way sheldon's voice is deeper than normal makes me think someones monkeyed with the audio and processed it to filter out the laughter track which has affected the tone of the audio slightly.

That's what they did. If you watch the outakes on the dvd when they flub a line there is laughter. Why would you insert a laugh track on outakes? They film before an audience.

Good for you, posting the most boring character on the show who always sounds like he's reading a prompter.

Check out the show without the laugh track:

I swear, the fact this this is popular and is winning awards makes me worry about the future of comedy.

Um...good for me? It's a joke sir. You have your opinion...I have mine. I disagree with yours.

So... since your definition of comedy is different than mine, please enlighten me as to which sit-com makes you laugh?

Anyone who doesn't think this show is funny clearly isn't watching it on a quark gluon plasma screen.

The free gluons really sell a punchline.

...Too nerdy?

I'm kind of curious about this myself. If you post on this forum regularly, there should be something about this show you enjoy. Yes, of course you are more than entitled to your opinion, I'm just sincerly curious what you find funny. Sienfeld? Friends? Gilligan's Island? (Which I happen to love all three BTW :))

Fine, I'll bite.

Arrested Development
30 Rock
Modern Family
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Andy Richter Controls the Universe
The Office (the first few seasons - it's garbage now)

Basically any comedy that respects that the viewers might, just might, be smart enough to figure out what to laugh at. The only laugh track show I really enjoyed was Roseanne.

I've always wondered about this. Several of the shows you list are what I consider to be not funny at all. I have yet to have anyone be able to explain it to me so that it makes sense so perhaps you can help me.

To me most of the shows center around stupid people acting stupidly. I call it moron humor. Why would I watch a show about someone who is so stupid that they muddle through life acting stupidly? I see enough of those people in the real world. I do enjoy 30 Rock, and some Curb, but with Curb it's the same. Let's see how dumb Larry David can be this episode.

I'm certainly not condemning anybody for watching these show. If they like them than great. I just don't get it.

Larry's eccentric. The people on BBT are just as bad - if not worse. And they aren't funny, so it makes it even worse.

Ok. I understand that you don't like BBT. We will have to disagree on the shows that you think that are. I don't particularly find any of them funny except for 30 rock. I laugh at the way you so matter-of-factly have pronounced the show not funny at all.

Again, we'll have to agree to disagree. :cool

Do you even know for sure what show(s) if any uses a canned laugh track?

The dozen or so shows I've seen filmed always indicated the laughter of the audience was used in the show. Hence the live studio audience. Even "on location" portions of the episode are shown on monitors in the audience to garner audience reaction to those scenes.

I haven't watched sitcoms in years, but enough people told me about this show that I fiannly checked it out this past summer. I now own seasons 1-3 on DVD, and one of my favorite shows on TV.

Though I'm not nearly as smart as the characters, enough of their nerdiness is right on the mark. Whenever Sheldon mentions his watch that gets updates from the atomic clock in Boulder, CO, my wife just looks at me and chuckles.

I must say that after hearing a lot about the show I watched a few episodes and hated it. After seeing 3 or 4 I started getting the characters and since have watch all of the episodes. I love the lite-hearted humor and the nerdiness. It's a nice diversion.

I just started getting into advanced physics so this show's perfect for me. I liked it, although I'd have to say that it's a bad episode to start on because so much of the date relies on knowledge of how Sheldon would answer the questions Penny was asking the other girl.
