The beginning of a ruttin nice knife: Jaynes knife from "Jaynestown"

Some of you more adept folk might have noticed my recent rather absurb interest in Firefly/Serenity props...This was spurred on by the Sidkit Blaster...
Ive attacked that project full force and also taken on collecting several other props; Jaynes knife, Jaynes hat, shirt and necklace as well as printing out my own 'verse money after purchasing the QMx money, i wasnt very impressed.... i like my own better than theres...
anyway.....
I have been a Firefly fan for a few years now but only recently taken to gettin the props..... (and also talking Joss-talk) but one prop that has really stuck out to me for a while is the very distinct stag handled bowie knife that Jayne has in "Jaynestown".... in practically every other episode of the series and the movie, he has the trademark Henry Libery bowie, but for whatever unexplained reason he has a very interesting bowie in this one episode..... It appears to be made from a wood rasp with the square markings on the flats of the blade being a tell-tell sign...... however after close inspection, they seem a bit TOO symetrical to be a REAL rasp blade....
My good friend Earl Blackmore, whos also a firefly flan were discussing this knife and have decided to take it up as a project.... Earl is a talented swordsmith who has done some really excellant knives as well...... including a set of important butterfly swords for me, but ill make another thread out of that topic....
anyway, Earl was kind enough to do some research of his own and came up with this design....... this is sort of a work in progress and will no doubt change thru out its making..... hopefully to be more accurate, but anyway this is what we have so far......
This is going to be an expensive project, but the end result will be a VERY functional REAL bowie knife that has been hand forge and all hand made.
The handle WILL be made of real stag, and be matched as closely as possible to the one in the Show...... The blade will probably be forged and the pattern, we are thinking, will be easier to "fake it" than to use a rasp.
Rasps are made out of all kindsa steel , some good, some bad..... tracking down a rasp made of decent steel AND with the correct pattern may be more trouble than its worth.....

Here are some pics of the knife used in Arrested Developement: (It's the episode when Michael decides not to backstab Gob in stealing Gob's girlfriend)

id hate to hold that heavy thing in MY teeth for that long.....
UNLESS

heres a wild thought: what if it was a FAKE knife...
think about it..... we only saw it ONCE in Firefly... and it was when Jayne threw it into someones chest...... so maybe they needed a stunt knife.... and the Henry bowie wasnt setup for that, so instead of making a stunt Henry bowie, they used another one....

I mean theres really nothing to say that its a steel blade right?

That would make sense since Gob needed to hold it in his mouth in the show. The segment where he has it in his teeth runs about a minute and it would make sense that it would be a stunt knife for Jayne in firefly.

yeh, thats not a small knife by any means.... and stag isnt a light weight material either.. so id imagine this knife in its REAL form is going to be pretty heavy... so id tear his jaw out holding a real knife that long...
heck, the Henry bowie weighs well over a pound...

that would be a good possiblity....
The pattern on the flats of the blade sorta give it away that its "fake"
I mean its obvious its suppose to look like a rasp blade but its just a bit TOO symetrical... id guess painted on...

question: i never watched arrested development, but did it air AFTER firefly?

Yeah, given that as I recall "Jaynestown" is the only time we ever see his knife get stuck in somebody, it makes perfect sense to me they used a stunt backup of some kind they found in somebody's prop room.

Seems to be the way of things in the 'verse. Big on recycling and all. :)

any additional information about it would be helpfu,

Franz..... am i right in thinking that its a rubber or resin knife? that its NOT steel?

Here is his reply. I'll post all the info I can. I want to ask him first if he minds if I post his name and info. I hope to get more info soon.

I sent him the screencaps of the magician guy that were posted.

Thank you for your question. The knife is indeed one I made, but it wasn't made specifically for the movie. Many of my movie knives were bought by prop houses after they were used, and they rent them out to other films. This is one of those! The strange part is that the knife in the photo is a real knife and not a 'second' (a rubber version that looks just like it). Rarely will a real knife be used in an action scene or if the actor is going to put it in his mouth!

If the prop maker decides to make some more, I know a few will be very interested. If not, I wait for your run David Stokes.

I asked him for pics and asked if he has any stunt versions available.

UPDATE:
His latest reply is:
Glad to be of help. Unfortunately I'm really bad about taking photos of the knives I make for movies. I'm so busy and always just get them done before deadline, that I'm just glad I get them out to the set in time! If you go to my website, you can see some knives (especially in the "one of a kind") that are similar, especially in the horn material of the handles.
