A bit self indulgent but I like many others have made the odd lightsaber over the years, starting with cardboard wrapping tubes to broomsticks.
Back in 2012 my wife sprang a suprise Starwars Emersive Secret Cinema event in London, this involved us both being given a sub character to play in the interactive proceedings of the night, But more importantly a costume needed we did.
We had three days to make full Jedi costumes together including a Cloak, and more importantly a lightsaber.
It all came together and we got mistaken as cast members so something went right... or it was a little dark inside the venue.
Wandering the dimly lit streets of London Town after hours we got heckled with everything from Orks to Vikings!
I had come across the RPF years back as a lurker when research was needed for my Nostromo jacket and the info and the community spirit was second to none for information.
I scowered the Jedi pipe build threads which helped me thrash together a quick pipe build.
The local builders supplies plus two garden LED lights..
Became..
I wasn't going for accuracy more a flavour of and being our own characters think they were OK for a quick build.
Can't find a full pic of costume but this gives an idea of it..
Role on ten years one georgian house renovation and re building a workshop and the bug bit back.
Having collected all manner of things over the years I decided to try make a better Lighsaber.
Originally I was going to make an odds n ends saber like this..
But quickly realised I wanted more and the obsession started..
when I stumbled on a neighbours TV antenna dumped in the back lane and it spoke to me..
The few cogs I have started turning and whilst I was waiting for a helmet to cure I grabbed the antenna and started dismantling it..
Now I haven't really touched metal fabrication since I used to cast precious metals in my old Dental job so thought I'd go the safe route of seeing what I could achieve with my limited tools available.
I played around with sink tubing but found it hard as hell to cut but maybe the blade was blunt. Anyway the TV Antenna was far easier to cut.
It then dawned on me that this looked graflex like and I thought how easy or hard would it be to make one of those instead.
The TV tube was slightly narrower at 34 mm but I used the measurements ish from an online template to see if I could make something that satisfied my itch..
I knew the measurements were wrong/out of line and some parts were temporary till I could find better alternatives or replicas..
I only have a drill a vice and.. I kid you not a hacksaw blade without a handle atm..
So its going to be a bit rough n ready until I can unpack my dental drills from storage.
It seems I am learning something new about Graflex flash units every day.
