Temple of Doom banquet beetle - what species?

Does anyone know what species the beetle eaten in the banquet scene in Temple of Doom is? Is it even a real species, or something that just looks beetle-ish? Looking to try to find some cheap replicas for my Indy display.

I haven't come across anything that has the three protrusions coming out of the head in that sort of shape/length. The Unicorn beetle looks closest, but even that is way off.

Looks like a variation of the Atlas beetle or 'Chalcosoma atlas' :

Other three horned beetles are the Chalcosoma caucasus or the Chalcosoma mollenkampi.

Found a link to some rhinoceros beetles: http://www.angelfire.com/ns/RhinocerosBeetles/

*Edit - forgot to add that these Chalcosoma are indigenous to southeastern Asia and more specifically Malaysia*

I'm nearly positive it was custom built for the show. I believe the legs were wire with hot glue. TomSpinaDesigns owned one at one time.

Here's one I made years ago with an available plastic kit. It may in fact have been the rhinoceros beetle. I had to modify it for the three horns.

That's hilarious. With one that opens you could gross your friends out by eating the insides - with them not realizing that the insides were also made by you... out of peanut butter! :lol

Actually, I used a blend of chocolate and vanilla pudding!

I just had it identified by a bug guy who sells framed bugs from around the world. He said it was an Elephant Beetle.

godofinsects.com :: Elephant Beetle (Megasoma actaeon)

He had one but the wings were opened and I would rather have it like in the film. Was going for $136. He identified the one from Seradnab's site. Nice prop find by the way.

Hope this helps,

Lives in northern South America! Not even close to India. I love the movies!
