so, this show premiered after face off, so i thought i give it a shot

basicly, 7 people get to work as interns at stan lees comikaze

well if that thing isnt full of stereotypes, then i dont know what is. they picked one of every demographic group, and put them together in a house, their first assignment was get signatures to make a petition to make geek pride day a national holiday (100.000 iirc)
so, these guys went and made some flags and posters, and then they forgot the signing sheets.
so they bought a few notebooks for signatures. they collected a whopping 400 signatures, so they called it a day. after about an hour of work, they went for drinks and food. then they complained about how dancers in costume ruined the geek culture.
then they went back to their house and sat in the hot tub.

i liked the concept of the show, if it were just geek house, put a few geeks together and let them do stuff. but with an internship, if you cant even do the simplest of jobs, it pisses me off to no extent. i wouldve fired them the next day. reality tv strikes again.

the only genuine moment was when the one huge trekkie got to meet george takei, and either that guy is a great actor, or it was really the greatest moment of his life. thats the only thing that saved it for me. i will maybe give it one more episode, if i find the time.

anyone else see it?

Hey SyFy channel... how's about instead of making crappy movies and airing wrestling and reality television designed to cast people in the worst possible light, you maybe show some ACTUAL SCIENCE FICTION!!!!!!

Guess I am in the minority again. I actually enjoyed the show for what it was and I like how the cast are all very supportive of each other. I am sure the Heroes of Cosplay cast were generally very supportive of one another but the producers of that show went out of their way to make it seem like there was more drama and competitiveness than there really was.

Anywho, I also agree that I would really like to see some more Science Fiction shows. I miss Battle Star Galactica and i'm probably in an even smaller minority as I actually enjoyed Stargate Universe, it was a good premise. Wish stargate fans would have agreed. :p

You aren't the only one Spacebat. I thought it was kinda sincere in it's execution and honestly the type of show I thought HoC was going to be before the producers decided to focus less on the actual fandom and amazing craft work surrounding cosplay/ers, and more on the post-edit-created-drama surrounding a select few people all trying to turn their occasional weekend costuming passion into a day job.

Truth be told, I was ready for this to become SyFy's "Nerd-off".

***What happens when you stick 7 "stereotypical" freaks and geeks into a house together and let them compete in stupid games to see who can out-geek the other for a chance to win an internship with a convention creator and some old guy who is involved in comic books (tongue firmly in cheek)? Lets watch!***

But then SyFy went and showed them all to be genuine, normal people. They don't appear to be *maybe they are, maybe they aren't* characters playing a part for their moment of fame. And there wasn't a competition involved at all. They are just meant to be 7 people who happen to also be huge geeks, working together to make the world (ok ok...so it's just the greater Los Angeles area) a more geek culture friendly place. And all the while it's being filmed.

Even those parts that feel a little TOO reality-TV stupid (honestly...no one knew how to light a BBQ grill or adjust a thermostat on a hot-tub???) or forced for the sake of drama (ERHMEHGERD!! We left all the things to do our job properly back at home and didn't think to just send one of us back to the house to collect the stuff we need to do out job sooooooo screw it. Lets just send someone out to Staples to grab a couple of Trapper Keepers and call it a day even though this is an internship and there are probably 10,000+ other folks out there that want to replace you). Those moments were the only two in the entirety of the show so far that reminded me that I was watching reality television on SyFy.

Coming down after the majority of HoC's forced drama stuff (don't get me wrong, HoC still a guilty pleasure and the wifey and I are always going to be fans of Crabcat Industries and Chloe Dykstra), I was honestly ready to hate this show before I saw the first 5 seconds of it, but turns out I'm kinda digging it. Watching Andrew completely space out when meeting George Takei and then the aftermath of coming down from that experience was absolutely the most sincere moment of reality television I've ever seen. I kinda care about how this turns out for all of them instead of simply waiting to hear what horrible catty thing someone is going to say or do to another member of the cast next week. I'm a fan.

I'm kinda looking forward to the possibility of meeting these people at ComiKaze in November. They all seem like my type of people.

I liked the original Stargate movie but never watched a single episode of any of the series. Until SGU, and I watched every episode. Would have been nice to have a series finale.

As far as this show, I'll pass. I kept seeing the previews and that Trekkie guy saying he goes to the store in his Starfleet uniform "and people say, 'You're such a cosplayer!'" and all I could think was, "Uh, yeah. Sure they do."

Another crappy 'reality' show that follows "Face Off" the few instances of a show of quality on the Syphilis Channel.

The only thing that was remotely interesting was seeing Takei, but of course it was a 'coincidence' that there were flyers at the restaurant the interns just happened to be stopping at to pick up sandwiches talking about this event that was going to happen at a comic book store that only had 10 people show up for to participate in for a chance to have a dinner with a famous actor.

The fakery is strong with this one.

i would like this show if it was just 7 nerds in a house doing the stuff like in the first episode. its just the fakery with the internship that pisses me off. the concept is interesting, if it were without the internship thing

You know, I keep hearing the same argument. "I would like it, if not for the fakery." This is the channel that gave us Ghost Hunters and Paranormal Witness...

Why are we so hung up on a Reality TV show that's fake? They're all fake. I honestly would like to know why this bothers you guys so much.

I was sceptical since the promo *proudly* declared it was from the people behind "Jersey Shore"... I guess I'll check it out, but from the description of their massive failure on the task makes me hesitant. I can barely stand an episode of the non-geek "Apprentice" due to that phenomenon.

Because a show that is faked and scripted is not true "Reality" TV.

If they would just call it "Fake-ality" TV or "We're-pretending-this-is-real-so-you-can-really-laugh-at-the-expense-of-our-'contestants' TV, then it would be all good.

However, actually admitting that the whole thing is scripted will most likely make people realize exactly how horrible these shows really are. The label of "Reality TV" is what pulls people in because most of them actually believe that what they see is really happening and is unscripted.

All these shows are is a way for people to feel better about their own crappy lives by laughing at the misfortunes of others. It all boils down to "My life sucks, but at least I ain't THESE guys..."

Just had a chance to watch the first episode. With Heroes of Cosplay having just ended, it is impossible, not to compare the two.

While Fangasm isn't great reality TV (is there really any such thing?!?) it is so far ahead of Heroes of Cosplay, it FEELS like good TV. Is it staged? Clearly, yes, the situations are indeed staged, but the striking difference between Fangasm and Heroes of Cosplay is that the actors in Fangasm are portrayed in a fairly likable way and feel more genuine. I like a lot of the people in HoC, but they were, without much exception, portrayed in a very poor light.

The final moment of the first episode, with Andrew Duvall meeting George Takei, was so good and a moment I was dying for in Heroes of Cosplay, but just never got it. I don't blame the actors, but the producers and editors. They could have given us those moments in HoC, but went the cheap way out with the most absurd manufactured drama ever, between people in our community that they had already setup to be unlikable and unsympathetic.

Strangely, for all of its shortcomings, Fangasm is more of an example of how Heroes of Cosplay was mismanaged than anything else. :(

Couldn't agree more. Hate it for the cast of HoC, but maybe the positive effects of FanGasm will influence season 2 of HoC. (And considering SyFy's penchant to run with whatever made slightly more money than it lost, I can nearly guarantee HoC will get a season 2)

Because now it's ventured into the realm that people here care about. When it's chefs, fashion designers, rich people, washed up TV stars it's not a big deal. Now they're targeting "nerd-dom", costuming and Cosplayers people wanna get their jimmies rustled.

I missed the second episode. Well, saying I missed it is a stretch, more like I didn't see it. What do you mean by that?
