Oh your in for a treat lol. I learned the hard way... don't drink anything (especially coffee) for an hour before or during the process . Also, don't let anyone take pics. I still get teased from the pics my wife posted on FB.

Lol.. Yeah will make sure all cameras are hidden during process. My fear is that the guy comes on to read the electricity meter half way through.. Lol

I was totaly bored this morning and thought I would start making the dreads using backer rod I bought last year.

Now I feel totally deflated...they are absolutly S##T..They have the movement of a brick...Not happy..Pred budget is zero and no way I will afford to buy decent ones any time soon..wish I had never bought the rods..total waste of money..

I know the feeling, my first putting with dreads was using backer rod and my opinion was the same as yours they were *****, no flex and the f'ers continuously snagged on armour pieces backpack.... Needless to say I bought a booie set nor long after
 
That's why I'm working on making my own. Backer rod isn't an option any more, and I have a P2 that's gonna need dreads in the next several months. Honestly though, they're better than nothing until you can afford a good set.

I keeping my eye on your progress with dreads Brian and hope you perfect it soon. Once suit is finished I will use your knowledge in the process to try my own. The guy I bought my bio and mask from in the uk is now doing dreads and have contacted him for a sample... Nice Xmas prezzie me thinks...better start putting the hints in now...lol
 
Well managed to get my Duct Tape dummy completed...

I had my partner Ruth and my mate Scott (Starbeast62) doing the taping, Scott did insist that Ruth do the groin and ass area lol. After the first layer was on I could see a lot of smoke outside the front window, however we at first put it down to fog. The smell of smoke however started to waft into house though. On investiagtion they found out that it was a disused building at the other side of the village that was on fire much to my relief. I had visions of having to leave house taped up like a gimp to the amusement of neighbours and firemen...would have had to move house methinks lol. Scott decided to go and have a closer look and buggered off as did Ruth periodicly to look out the upstairs window and I was left feeling alone and a tad uncomfortable. Anyway it came the time to getting cut out the thing and that was not a very nice experience, Ruth kept saying that she went through childbirth and this in no way compared however it was agony. By the time they started cutting me out my body had swelled and the duct tape was constricting my skin. Now perhaps it was the wrong kind of scissors but I felt practicly every cut of the knife cutting into my skin, when eventually it was off I was bleediing through numerous scissor point marks and had a big red lines going up the cut lines, our wee nine your old nearly fainted at the blood. Weeeell its done now and its all for the cause. We ran out of time and partialy sealed the legs ready to put in the stand and stuff. Goood tip meethinks is to mark an X along the cutlines with permenant marker as this makes it easier to seal back up the dummy by matching the lines. Never again and look forward to when it is Scotts turn.
 
So, you bled for the cause eh? There's no going back now buddy! I told you it was loads of fun :p. I will say, you've got bigger stones than I do posting pics here...never in a million years would I have done it!!! Now, time for the real fun to start!

Boy am I glad I found this thread before I started to make my DTD....it is a wise man that learns from those who have gone before him and BOY I hope I have gained some wisdom here...

Lessons learned...use bandage scissors, assistants who are not easily distracted, apply the tape loosly and what ever you do...DO NOT post pictures of the process for the ammusment of fellow Lair members... :D

Another one I might add Steve is don't drink anything for an hour or so before hand (or while taped up), and use the head before your committed.

Well Duct tape dummy was a disaster. I went to stuff it tonight and found that it had kind of constricted itself on certain parts. The tape had sort of folded back on itself and stuck and no amount of teasing and trying to get back in shape would work. Had really got me down.. Pred budget is zero just now as partner is long term sick and my hours at work are reduced and the prospect of spending a fortune on tape let alone having to endure the pain again is not good.

Anyway it's my birthday on Saturday and may have to ask for duct tape from my mum.. Lol.

So guys where did I go wrong...

I used a Boba Fett suit to apply the duct tape too(same material as a mr I costume)

Should I have just used a jumper and jogging trousers?

Should I have put more layers of duct tape on.. Legs had at least 2, was starting to run out at torso level and parts maybe only had one layer.

Any Input and advice would be most appreciated and a nice Birthday prezzie..lol..

Yeah kind off, parts of the torso on particular, seemed to constrict on the material and bonded together. You know what duct tape is like once it, sticks itself, impossible to pull apart.
