Suicide Squad

Well thats because people can have different opinions. Its not because you have a certain opinion about anything that every1 else will have that same opinion. And ill answer what says Joker about this iteration when i see the movie cus performance is also very important.
You dont need to be a jerk about it. I was just saying that I dont understand it. The joker has been relatively the same since his inception, so to say youre a fan of the joker is to say that you like the character as he is. It just baffles me that when they take a completely different direction, how is he still the joker? Because they told us? Im not saying that your opinion cant differ, that would be stupid, but that doesnt mean that I have to understand why. Im a Superman fan, does that mean Im automatically supposed to like what WB tells me to like? "Hey we said he is Superman, even though he isnt anything like what you know to be Superman, except he is an orphan from Krypton, has a S on his chest, and can fly". Its the same thing with the characters in SS, so far at least. I just cant justify paying 14 dollars and the logistics of seeing the movie based on what they have showed so far, especially when these are adapted characters. I just dont get DC's approach.

What? Your first sentence on the first post kind of came off as douchey to me. Im not allowed to have an opinion? ;)

Well thats because people can have different opinions.

Like I said, this came off as jerky to me.

I'm not of the belief that it will resemble exactly either trailer, I think it will sit in a middle ground of the two - I appreciate that you believe the film will resemble the first. You're entitled to that belief, and fair play to you if you've guessed it correctly, hope you enjoy the savings and that you feel justified having not seen the film in cinemas (that's sincere, I'm a bit fed up of disagreements devolving into dislike)

I believe this film will be an interesting take on the idea of dangerous bad guys, forced into a situation that they don't want to be in (straight away there's a difference to people's utterly ridiculous Guardians comparison) with survival stakes, a darkly humorous edge punctured with some badass moments, that's pretty clear to me just laying out the moments I've seen in the trailers? The first comic con trailer showed us that this is a relatively serious take (as is DC's current overall tone) on these characters, but at no point did I expect the film to be all serious all the time...it has Harley Quinn and the Joker. If nothing else, the mentally unstable nature of both characters will lead to some naturally comedic moments. Which was confirmed in the further trailers. I'll totally admit that I didnt see them going with the popular song type trailer. But I think it worked really well. Surely you can see from some of the moments in the second trailers that there is more humour in this film than for instance BvS?? And that is not made up of any reshoot footage. David Ayer and Jai Courtney have seperately said the reshoots were for additional action, not humour. Even I'm not sure what to make of that, but I'm looking forward to this. I know that reshoots arent uncommon, at all - budget is specifically put aside for it. The only reason this has become such a big deal is the huge herd hate mentality that exists, we all want to jump on something and cry out about "proof" that we were right etc.

"Will watch any old thing" - I'm not rising to this as I really don't want to be combative here, it's a discussion about something that isn't even out yet. If I happen to enjoy something (MoS, BvS, Flubber, Last Action Hero, Ex Machina....etc. Myriad examples.) and others don't, neither of us are wrong. I don't like marmite. Do you? When I'm taking the time to put across well thought out arguments backed up by evidence either in films or books or things that the audience is presented with, and then articulate my interpretation of such, how is that wrong? It isn't.

You're right about this - I am remaining hopeful about a film I want to do well, in any situation (SS, WW, Dr. Strange etc. But absolutely nothing is a certain bet. And I choose to enjoy films on the big screen..personally it isn't a lot of money for something I class as one of my passions (film, cinema etc) Advising people to stay at home and miss out because a movie might not be their idea of perfection? Don't agree. See what you want, even if you're only curious. Because these types of films doing well is good for all in the genre. I've no doubt in 10/15 years there'll be reboots etc and the tables will turn for those that arent happy with what they are currently receiving - but that won't happen if the money dries up will it?

Anyhow. Appreciate the more in depth discussion, it is more refreshing than hurling short, sharp stabs back and forth.

Sure which is something i made clear in my post but dint know that also involves calling names as a part of that.

Anyway it would be better to read Fawbish last post and not have this thread cluttered with bs but rather overall good discussions and also respecting others people opinions without them then being called out on it. Already more then enough violence in the dc verse ;)

I have something to add between the two of you. Why is the comparison to GotG "utterly ridiculous"?

Ha! See, that last line of your last post was funny. Good one. :cheers

I didn't think Mektar came off as jerky there mate, he just stated a fact?

Every onscreen joker has had a different interpretation, each have their own strengths and weaknesses. We've collectively witnessed maybe 4 lines of dialogue and one or two laughs so far I think, though correct me there if I'm wrong. For me, I can see alsorts of influences in this joker, but it does seem like the New 52 Joker is a heavy influence, the guy that was psychotic enough to cut off his own face, and then actively hunts the Bat family. The films are another interpretation again, not a straight up adaptation either, as we all know. It's looking like we are getting a genuinely hurtful Joker, who isnt just a killer, but looks like he enjoys or has a reason for inflicting pain on others. Even Ledgers Joker was only concerned about creating anarchy and changing Batman's world view, and hurt or killed people to that end...I think this Joker enjoys it, or goes further with it. That's going to be interesting to see on screen in a morbidly fascinating way! He also looks physically capable - which is something that is very interesting I think. Ledger never pulled off physical threat (and that wasn't supposed to be his forte as a character so that's fine, it's not a criticism) well, whereas it looks like this Joker will possibly be able to go toe to toe with our new brutal Batman. In terms of pure looks, he hits the major marks, but has additional traits - whilst it's totally different, I see no issue with it. People saying that "the joker wouldn't do that"...^ see above. He HAD HIS OWN FACE CUT OFF. Haha! Mental, layered and hopefully well portrayed character by Leto, who is an awesome actor. Can't wait.

Because this is a story about a team of straight up murderers (not warriors, who we all know have inherently good traits) who are being forced to work together, not for the greater good or because they want to save anyone, but because they have miniature bombs (or equivalent) devices inside their necks/heads that will kill them if they refuse. They may end up forming a bond, and we may end up caring about some of the team, but it's not the same. I understand the perceived similarities of course - a team, a throwback trailer song, slightly more comedic edge (but I thought everyone thought this would be a serious unfun film.. ;)). In the same way that Star Wars is similar to Star Trek - would anyone claim that Star Wars was Lucas' answer to Roddenberrys Star Trek? Or vice versa?

Could always go back to the first appearance in comics, where Suicide Squad was 1959 I think, and Guardians 1969, but both nothing like the current iterations.

Whilst I appreciate that there are similarities, I hate generalisations like "DC's answer to" or "Marvel's answer to" etc. I'd defend Thanos in the same sense if people referred to him as "Marvel's answer to Darkseid" etc. (Can't wait for the onslaught of "DC have copied Marvel with their big bad villain" discussions...*holds head* haha)

They are their own teams/characters :thumbsup

Yes people, please stop throwing good money after bad...

Make Holywood tremble under our collective wallets. Stop settling...yes form your opinion, but good lord, repeat viewings? I won't do it with enjoyable brainless yarns let alone movies I struggle with. Their are other films that deserve a shot more than BVS and, possibly, Suicide Squad. If your a fan let it go down in flames if it's bad and know that it will rise like a rebooted Phoenix from the ashes, just like Fantastic Four will surely return.

I personally like the fact that this movie has humour in it, it would honestly be awful if it didn't considering the characters involved. I do find it weird that they decided to have older music in the trailers though. I'm not comparing the movies themselves, but at least GoTG had a real reason for the soundtrack being what it was... The mix tape is a huge part of Star Lord's character. SS seemed to have it in the trailer "just because". I'm incredibly excited to see Affleck, Leto and Robbie, not excited to see Will Smith and don't have any feelings whatsoever about the other characters to be honest. The movie itself I think will be pretty great as long as the audience is on board with the absurd/dark humour and can suspend their disbelief appropriately. My only issue with the "comedy reshoots" rumour is that if it's true it might give the movie a kind of humour that wouldn't fit, like straight up comedy instead of dark, morbid jokes, and it might feel shoehorned in. If the reshoots added more action, all good, since above all it is definitely an action movie. Overall I'm pretty keen, I've gotten far more excited for the movie over time, but I still strongly disagree with the visual design of the Joker and to a lesser extent Harley Quinn.

Just watched the trailer again and noticed something in a quote - no doubt it could be nothing.

SPOILERS for BvS below

"Gentlemen. Ladies. What if Superman, had decided to fly down, rip off the roof of the Whitehouse, and grab the president right out of the oval office. Who woulda stopped him?"

Listening to the inflection, it doesn't sound like he's talking in the past tense in a normal way, ie. what if this horse had won that race. It sounds to me like the had is speaking about Superman in the past tense ie. post death. So I'm positing that he still isn't out of the ground, and this is supposed to be set 6 months after BvS I believe.

In the comics, he was out of action for a year, and his heart beat once every 60 days. In the animated adaptation of Death of Superman, it was every 30 days and about 3 months before his robot assistant came to find him.

Thoughts? It could completely be nothing, but surely he would have said "What if Superman decided"...?

Well according to Zack the reason he is put out of the action for a prolonged period is so that its Batman who recruits and forms the JLA, rather than Superman just whizzing around and asking them. So He is likely to be out of it for a while at the very least. Which maybe no bad thing as perhaps Warner B and DC can employ writers that understand his grasp actual character and write something more effective for him, particularly with what they have decided to do with Ben Affleck and Batman

Aye, I know that was the reasoning behind the decision. But I'm more thinking about the story in universe than the need for him to be back in JL. Chris Terrio has written JL Part 1. And I want them to continue to develop this character, not just change him totally. Develop. Not getting into a discussion about the merits of the film though, just the factual stuff in universe is what I was querying.

So, "Because Zack Snyder hates Superman and has a hard-on for Batman," basically.

:lol Dan, that must be the shortest ,yet most concise summary I've seen from you ever.

But it sums it up perfectly, and is completely accurate. I think the only reason it was BvS and not a Batman movie, was because Snyder wanted to kill Superman so he didnt have to do anything with him for awhile.

Great discussion guys, you really added to it in a meaningful way. What a rich experience for us all. :thumbsup

Im sorry I didnt touch on your counter argument to what I said earlier, but Im sick(flu) and lazy. Ill get to it eventually though. :)

Not that, mainly just the discussion of the future of the characters, I'm just interested in how it will go. It just seems to drag people into the same tired hate discussion each time, and really stifles the enjoyment of geeking out over things, is all. :thumbsup

I've re watched the trailers a few times now. I think Leto is going to be really quite menacing and powerful, no matter his physical appearance. And I'm definitely a lot more interested in El Diablo than I was before - he looks to be a bit of a tortured character that's perhaps afraid of his own abilities a bit? Looks like it's gonna be a great supporting role.

I get what youre saying, but I think the "geeking out" part goes hand in hand with people that have different ideas of the characters they hold dear. Hopefully the movie is good, thats what really matters. I just dont know if Im going to see it in theaters, at least wait and see if my friends buy a ticket it first. Let them risk their money! :lol I dont know exactly what his abilities are, Ill have to look them up. Judging from the trailer though, looks to be a cool power. Seems to be the only member of the squad with a power as opposed to a skill set.
