SubZero Build - Freeze Spray

So this all started with holding a can of "computer duster" aka compressed air upside down and seeing the ice cold gas spray out. I thought to myself; "How cool would it be to somehow turn that into a SubZero costume? I could go around frosting peoples beers!" So 5 years has passed since then and I decided to give it a go.

I will use this thread to talk about my progression though this project incase someone else wants to tackle it. I think the final product is pretty cool! Pun intended. :)

So are you going to be using actual canned air spray? Or maybe some other thing that contains compressed R152a? Sound pretty cool. Just be careful where you point those things lol

Doesn't really sound safe pointing duster at people's drinks. Although I can imagine this being made, for example, putting two upside down canisters behind your back with hoses and a pressure release button... But still, I'd prob grab another beer, ha.

Truth be told, I am actually pretty far along this project. I will use this post to catch everyone up.

The first thing I realized with compressed air is the mix it with a chemical called "bitterant". It is added to the stuff to make it taste awful because kids are huffing the stuff to get high. (really?!) The bitterant is really nasty stuff. After some testing I didn't know that some got on my hands, then my hands went near my mouth and WHEW! I had a nasty taste in my mouth for about a half hour. The only thing that would dull it was milk.

So I had two choices, only use this costume around no other people (whats the point?) or find an alternative. On a side note, I tried search all of the internet for compressed air without bitterant to no avail. I'm sure i was placed on some NSA watch list because of that.

Enter SUPER COLD by MG Chemicals:

The stuff is used to chill electronics. It sprays out a -60°F (!!!) with the same frost affect as compressed air. The only difference is that this can is held upright to get the frost effect, not upside down like the compressed air. The best part, no bitterant! A couple disclaimers:

If you're a kid and plan on huffing stuff, please don't. First you'll ruin me getting refills. Second you'll give yourself frostbite because it sprays out at -60°F!! Needless to say anyone should be careful working with this stuff. It is really cold!!

Now that I knew what my fuel was, I needed to come up with a way to fire it like Subzero! My though was to use a linear actuator to depress the nozzle and some conductive thread on each of my wrists to complete the circuit when I made the freeze move. (not sure if that's what it is called)

I'm lucky enough to be pretty good at 3D modeling and also to have a 3D printer at home (Makerbot 2). So it was time to prototype. After A LOT of prototyping I had my 'final' 3D model:

A couple notes on the model. I wanted everything to be enclosed, meaning I didn't want wires everywhere. So I built the wiring system into the design. The part below the can is the battery pack (4AA batteries) and also holds the can in place so the actuator does not push it down. The next step was to print the final version! Here it is:

Everything works as planned!! So here are my next steps that I will be documenting:

1. Create a sub costume that is detachable from the main component. That way it will be really easy to get in and out of instead of having the whole thing connected together.
2. Work on sewing up the conductive thread pads and come up with a way to hold the hose in place without giving my self frostbite.
3. Get the actual costume done!!!

Thats all for now. If people are interested I can go into items in more detail. Thanks for viewing!!

Impressive use of 3D printing. It almost makes me wonder if those timed fragrance sprays you would see in the bathroom could be rigged to do the same? Just an idea. I am also curious as to where this device is going on your costume? Where would you wear it?

Looks cool though, props.

This is going to be one interesting build. Can't wait to see the fully costume come together. Be sure to post a video of this bad boy in action once everything's done. I wanna see a real life freeze from Sub-Zero.

Here is a quick video of it in action. I found a quick release coupler that will allow me to easily connect and disconnect the hose. This will allow me to put the costume on easier. In the video the extension hose is not connected.

The forearm guards came in! Im going to use these to sew on the conductive thread to activate the spray. I have the thread (as you can see below) but the sewing needle I have does not have a big enough eye to fit the thread. I was hoping to have that part done tonight but it will have to wait until tomorrow.

SubZero Build - Freeze Spray COMPLETE

I know this thread hasn't gotten much activity but I figured I'd post the completed build anyway. Over all it was a pretty cool process. Took a lot of time prototyping and working out the kinks but in the end it works perfectly! I can even frost a beer bottle! :) The can of coolant only gets me about 60 - 90sec of continuous spray but I will be carrying around 4 extras. All the tubes/wire will be covered up by the rest of the costume. Thanks for checking this out!

That looks absolutely amazing man, fantastic design and application. Congrats on a job well done.

seriously dude, this is shaping up to be one of the best costumes ive ever seen. After this youll have to make a scorpion costume with working spear! GET OVER HERE!!!
