Steam Punkers.. please read.

I am proud to announce the establishment of a thread devoted to us... the makers of the fantastical. Sponsored by the quite exclusive yet easily accessible GENTLEMEN'S GADGETEER SOCIETY*.

The G.G.S. is for all of you good gentles who wish to share and expand your ever insatiable need to explore the power of steam , the incredible vistas of Aether, and the possibilities that this new science offers!

To that end I have posted the folowing images of my latest Steam Punk item under construction: twin energy pistols. These images offer little in the way of concrete information, so questions are welcome and will be answered as completely and gleefully as possible.

You do realize you can't Copyright an organization name, right. You either have to get it Registered or Trademarked. Be prepared to shell out some dough if you are serious.

Other than that, cool idea.

Ahhh but there's the rub. It doesn't exist as an organization... only a name. the combination of words is strictly a piece of intellectual property as applied to a fictional entity. It could just as easily be the name of a comic book or work of speculative fiction. Which falls under copyright, not trademark.

And it doesn't hurt that the initials are the same as my own. ;)

I will be watching this thread with great interest.............

I have taken the name:

'Gaslight Garage'

for my projects. I have yet to upload my 'Wonderful Weaponry' as I have commercial interest in them, which I hope I can share in the very near future.

The Honourable Custom Creations (which, incidently, is trademarked!)

Here's a few pics of a couple of my Victorian blaster builds, built three or so years ago.
I don't make these anymore after turning my attention to cut-away sabers, but I may visit this theme again when time permits.

So where is the GGS website?

Sorry, Yodasan, no website.

To reiterate: The GGS does not exist. There is no organization called The Gentlemen's Gadgeteer Society. But the concept for such an organization DOES exist, and that concept is mine. ( I fully intend to use the name in a work of fiction coming up very soon, so I'm being careful how I use it.)

But for this purpose, we are all welcomed to pretend that we are part of this fictional group... like one would pretend to be part of the League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen or the like. (L.E.O.G. is copyright Alan Moore a far as I can discern)

So...

Post your pics. Show off your gadgetry.... and NOT JUST WEAPONS! I want to see the extra stuff too. Lets see all the glorious brass and steel and wood and glass gizmos and doo-dads you all have come up with.

I may have posted in the other thread... those are exceptionally sweet. Extraordinary work!

PLEASE feel free to post those Gaslight Garage creations here. I intended this to be an "inspiration" thread.

And as I stated above, I'd love to see stuff other than weaponry. What would a Steam Punk explorer have with them? What kind of adventuring gear would they carry?

I have a bunch of concepts, but I'd like to see everybody else's ideas too!

Not that it matters really, but just because it came up in context recently of a discussion I was having about another title, this is a quote from the US copyright Office .

" Copyright does not protect names, titles, slogans, or short phrases. In some cases, these things may be protected as trademarks. "

Still a cool idea, and this type of work seems to be happing more and more so it would be great to have a focus for it. :thumbsup
Maybe if it is popular enough it could have its own forum on the RPF boards?

I'm working up some logos for you GGS, which can be trademarked. :)

Check your PM's tonight.

OH, I'll be posting some of my steampunk stuff later on, including raw designs.

Love the idea of a "society" of steampunkers :) Very cool.

That's interesting...never run into that before. I'll keep that in mind! Thanks for the info!

And by gum... I think your idea of Steam punk style props (not just originals, but replica steam-punkian props from movies and tv as well) should have their own spot in the forum is a CAPITAL one! Who do we lobby to achieve this?

Glad you were inspired! :)

I originally came up with the idea like most of the ideas I come up with... sitting on the loo. :rolleyes You'd be amazed how inducive to creativity a quiet, solitary space can be. :confused

But I wrote a pretty in-depth, though incomplete, treatment on the idea as a fictional work. I had intended to turn it into the basis for a film or comic script. I'm going to refrain from posting it here, but if anyone wants to read the early concept, I can pass it along with the promise it goes no further.

I'm doing a steampunk comic now that will be published next year. It's called City Of Iron. Here is a little preview:

COI%20cover.jpg

I don't want to give too much away, but it takes place in a massive city with a culture based on steam power. You can expect lots of blasters, clockwork robots, flying vehicles, politics, action, punks, steam. ;)

COI%20guard.jpg

It's all based on a screenplay I've been writing as well. No idea if I'll produce the film, but we'll see how 2008 goes for me. ;) The comic is a go though.
