Stargate Ori wall sconce project

Now my Atlantis dogbone light is almost finished I decided to make a start on the Ori wall sconce.

A member on the RPF was very helpful, and sent me his sconce to copy. This is the only complete one that I think was ever sold, the other two were missing there lights. The silver pointy bit around the light is made from 6mm Aluminium and has symbols machined in to it. I decided that to do a run of these sconces using Aluminium would put the price up too much for people, so I cast it in resin. This was painted Aluminium then watered down black Acrylic was used to bring out the symbols. The light was simply vacuum formed over the top of the original light but I have molded it and am making two vacuum forming bucks, so there will be an inner and outer shell like the SGU sconces I made. The shield is made from 12 mm MDF just like the original and was coated in a layer of black resin and then drips of resin was added to try and replicate the effect on the original. I am not happy with this and am going to try using hammered paint. When I received the sconce it also came with four extra rivet heads which I molded. There is a hole in each corner to fix it to the wall, so for the covering rivets I'm going to cast magnets in to them so they will stick to the screws. I have a little more to do but not bad for 24 hours:D

The original is on the right.

Whaaaat what! This is Dope.

Ori = Pure evil - But they knew how to design ;)

I made an inner and outer vacuum forming buck for the light but I was not happy with the way they turned out. I have decided to make it like the original in three parts. The base and the hoop in resin and the light in vacuum formed plastic. The parts will have brass thread inserts so they can be taken apart if you need to replace the lights. I think I will try useing gloss black on the next one. The real one is on the right.

I made two new vacuum forming bucks from polyester as I knew this shrinks when it cures, this allowed for the thickness of the vacuum forming plastic. The lens is made from 1.5 mm clear HIPS and frosted on the inside using Tamiya flat clear spray.

A strip of bright LED's runs down the spine and the three parts are held together by stainless bolts with brass threaded inserts. I will have to take the light apart again as I forgot to add the reflective foil to the inside of the base:facepalm All the back shields have been cnc'd to match the original holes. The sconce will be in the junkyard tomorrow or Monday:D
