Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG moving to FREE

Lord of the Rings Online, it may not be the flashiest, but it's a nice game and they don't try to shaft you too hard most of the time.

I hope there were a lot of proud moments for BioWare during development, because all I'm getting from this news is that the game is under performing and losing players. Wear those marks with pride ladies and gents.

Even if the game dies in a year or two, they have still made a mark in the Star Wars universe. A mark that won't fade. I'd wear that ink proudly.

It may be a mark, but it won't be as big of a mark that they made with the original KOTOR. That game had great story telling, great characters, and a great showcase of female characters who may also be the lead character that not even the original movies can match. Also, where are my same-sex relationships that were announced? Are they trying to leave a mark, or just play it safe? Tell them to live up to their marks.

I enjoyed the game for the month or two that I played it. But it felt like a single player game. I NEVER at any point felt like I was playing an MMO. That sense of community and group never felt real to me, only once did I ever play with a friend of mine online.

That being said, it's got it's strong points. But I think the only thing that's going to be remembered from it is the amazing CG trailers.

Imagine if instead of spending 120 million to develop SWTOR they spent 120 Million to do a dark gritty Jedi vs Sith CG movie in that style?

Huh. Glad I never went to it. I can't tell you how many WoW players were saying it was going to be the greatest thing ever and how they were leaving WoW for it. And then no more than a year later, they're back to WoW.

Just downloaded and signed into SWGemu.

I can't believe how much I forgot about this game! (this coming from someone who played from launch day and unlocked Jedi around profession # 12 or 14)

is it back? i left after the wipe last year? the year before? is it populated now?

yea on my city map it looked like the old pre CU days by all the player's dots on the map!

i just visited the site. basilisk looks promising. when i checked the stats it said 3002 people on a server with only 3000 spaces.

are you on basilisk? i take it that there will be a wipe on that server soon?

Kinda like DCU, they let you buy stuff for your characters, and force you to buy new expansions.

DCU huh? Man, that is a game I haven't talked about in a WHILE. I actually still pay for my sub, but am not sure why anymore. I haven't played in a long time. I was playing since launch, I was one of the best Controllers on my server. Once the server merge happened, I think I may have been one of the top 20 controllers in the game.

Alkali. Mental Controller.

It was a lot of fun. I was in a great league. BUT BUT BUT, then Star Wars was announced. It was around the same time that things went to crap w/DCU. The Green Lantern pack had been out for not too long. The Fortress of Solitude part 2 had just come out. We were beating that left and right, but as I said, Star Wars was just announced. Half our league was talking about leaving DCU for WEEKS because "Star Wars just looked SICK". They couldn't wait to leave all the problems of DCUO behind.

Now to read this.......kind of sucks. I would have still been playing DCUO if we didn't lose so many people to Star Wars. Lost a lot of good people. But half my friends list still plays DCUO. I have missed out on a lot in the almost year since I've played.

Either way, good to see people still playing DCUO.

I'll throw my two cents in on this. Just to give you background here, I played Everquest for 7 years and Warcraft for 5 so I have logged my fair share of time in MMOs.

The wife and I played Warcraft together and most of the people we played with quit and we were quit bored after Cata came out so we made the jump to Star Wars. Personally I find it very similar to WoW with a Star Wars facelift. I find the game quite fun and at least on my server there is always a ton of people on. During peak hours there are usually 2-3 instances of fleet up which means about 700 people just in fleet.

If you like PvP there is usually about a 1 minute wait for the que to pop.

They recently put in a group finder for flashpoints and operations which makes it loads easier to do the end game stuff if your friends are not on.

I found the space combat missions too easy myself. I decked my ship out as much as I could and can go through all of them without a problem. My wife hates the space combat and has only blue level gear on her ship and I still went through all the missions to get her the "Hot Shot Pilot" title without dying. So far from impossible to do. I do wish it wasn't a straight rail shooter though.

I love how they have made it where you can look however you want and still have good gear. With the new adaptive armor you can take the high level gear that looks like poo, strip all the mods/enh etc and put them into almost anything you want and not be much worse for the transition.

They have had an in game event similar to the Warcraft "Zombie Breakout" from years gone by and have several others coming soon.

The game has had consistent updates and new content added.

If you are one of those people like me who collects mounts/pets in the game there are loads to get. At least on the mount end as the pets are a little lacking. I currently have 38 mounts and there are several left for me to work for. There still are a ton of achievements left to figure out as well if that's your sort of thing.

Is the game perfect? Far from it. Way too easy to make credits in the auction hall and you can get end game gear without doing end game content if you want to spend the absurd credits people charge for some of the stuff. There are still sound bugs and issues with the group finder that need to be ironed out. The crafting is very easy compared to other MMOs as well which is good and bad depending on how you want to look at it.

As a whole though I enjoy this game more than I did warcraft for the last few months I was over there and I have been playing star wars since the day of launch. Not everyone is leaving and hating this game. It's definitely more of a casual MMO where you can come on, hang out with friends, play a couple of hours and still feel like you accomplished something without having to sit there for days on end hoping for the rare spawn to pop and hope you get that rare piece for your epic weapon etc.

There's a level cap before the $$$ comes into play if you want to go further. The only time you'll see EA and "free" in the same sentence is here.

Check out the Guild Wars model by ArenaNet. You only have to buy the game itself. No monthly subscription, no level restrictions, access to all areas, etc. It's been going on 7 years strong. There are microtransactions but they have absolutely no affect on the game itself other than for cosmetic purposes, extra character slots and extra in game storage. Guild Wars 2 which is coming out in less than a month will follow the same model.

Guild wars isn't releviant here, it started out as a no sub fee game, It didn't turn to that because of falling subs.

I pretty much stopped playing SW: TOR when my lvl 50 Jedi Shadow turned out to be not really my play style, and I couldn't see leveling up another toon.

*sigh*

If you think this game is bad wait for Mass Effect online. They're trying to make a Shadowrun online but that sounds horrid to me, then again i'm not an online gamer. I know Square took a major hit with one of it's online Final Fantasy games to the point the people working on it in japan publicly apologized for how bad it was.
