Star Wars movie set den build

Since I posted the first photo today, I did a graphics simulation on it. The ceiling grid might end up a little bit like this...
attachment.php

It might be an ugly simulation, but... I'm firm on the placement of the corner boxes and the round fan, but anything else goes! Hey, if you feel like drawing on the pic of the grid and posting it, well good, group project time! :)

That's amazing are you doing any work on the full scale millennium falcon?

No, just doing my own thing, although I am following the progress of that thread daily!

Today's progress, got the grid painted flat black on both sides. It's not going together exactly as I anticipated due to where the pre-drilled holes are in the frame. Did I mention the frame is made of heavy-duty shelf uprights? I bought all that Lowe's had. Gonna try a different Lowe's store tomorrow.

This project is full of surprises. Last night I found out this frame is 2" too large to fit through my house doors! I'll have to build it in the garage, then unbuild it, then build it again in the house. :facepalm

OH MAN... I feel your pain, my friend! The project is looking good. If I can suggest the greeblie layout for the ceiling? Add a few more random PVC pipes with curves. Also, adding two more different sized pipes coming from one of the corner boxes into another box will add a lot of dimension and design. Just a thought :)

Keep up the great work. Have you done a panorama image of the room yet? :)

Wow amazing work! I'm new here and I was hoping for some inspiration... got far more then I expected. :D Looking forward to watching this continue forward!

Okay. I don't have a pipe bender, but I did go to a discount store and find some long hoses for $5 apiece. They are gray dishwasher drain hoses. Should work out fine.

Not yet. I've got a few more wall panels to build, and some trim around my light switches. Thanks for doing the graphic simulation!

Tonight I'm working on ceiling boxes. There's one on the left which has not been painted yet. What is that made of?...
attachment.php

It's a $2 plastic paint roller pan. I made it out of one of the pans on the right. It's just flipped over and chopped up a bit. Two bucks! They will get painted dark gray, then internally lit.

I'm searching for additional interesting-looking box shapes that match the screen captures.

Construction destruction continues. Video! I chop up one of the cheap-o plastic toolbox lids, making shapes to add to the room.
And after hacking up 4 toolbox lids, I have an assortment of pleasingly weird shapes.
attachment.php

After some edge sanding, these will be glued to other panels. They will be painted dark gray. Some will be lit internally.

Yes, the soundtrack is made of Star Wars "stuff". Did you hear James Earl (CNN) Vader saying "You don't know the power of...CNN"?

This week I found two more ceiling boxes! I've been on the lookout for plastic housings that have a slanted end. Here are two of them before modification and painting. The first "box" is an old UPS case...
attachment.php

And the 2nd "box" is a plastic CD rack..
attachment.php

These will be gutted and painted dark gray, then hung horizontally on my ceiling framework.
I'm working toward getting the feel of this example utility-looking ceiling with the pipes and the boxes and the lights...
attachment.php

Any ideas what I could use for more of the boxes?

I bought a pasta salad the other day and thought about this thread because the container had nice tapered sides. It would be too small for what you are wanting to do, but a nice, almost futuristic look to it. Most of the large plastic containers are more square or have wheels on the base.

Spent about 3 hours today prepping some parts n pieces for the ceiling grid. Feeling creative. I like this panel, based on the top of a 1990's UPS unit...
attachment.php

and it is painted here...
attachment.php

and some more shapes being readied for the ceiling...
attachment.php

something to be lit from within...
attachment.php

and my favorite soon-to-be ceiling decoration piece so far. It has that sideways red lens in it. I am looking forward to making a lighted front panel to slide in there...
attachment.php

Below, obviously, are some power couplers and exhaust ports. Which is which? I think you know...
attachment.php

also I was messing around, simulating some red and green buttons. No flash and flash...
attachment.php

My wife pressed those. I went "Voorp!". She snickered and walked away.

For my next trick, I gotta figure out how to hold up a steel ceiling grid framework and hang it from my flat-black popcorn ceiling. That should be interesting.

Yes! I figured it out! I solved the riddle of how to fit a large steel ceiling grid into my house door. It was 2" too tall to fit. Just fold it all up like an Easy-Up tent. So I loosened all 16 bolts and collapsed it.
attachment.php

Now we're cooking. I can fit this 81.25" x 81.25" square grid through the doors and into my den.
attachment.php

Look up. So now I am one step closer to getting rid of this ugly abortion of a ceiling light fixture. Eww!
attachment.php

I don't know if I want the floating ceiling grid in the middle of the room or offset. I think I want it centered over the U-shaped desk. So I'm laying down some blue tape to mark off the floor and ceiling. I can look up and down and see if that's where I want it.

Some special ceiling LED spotlights arrive from Hong Kong tomorrow. Can't wait to see what those look like.

The Hong Kong LED fixtures arrived. These will be mounted in my floating ceiling grid, yet to be hung. I dropped the metal LED housings into the bottoms of the $5 black tool boxes to check for fit...
attachment.php

The LED assemblies have spring clips on the back that hold them into place. That was easy! I added a 120 Volt cord to one, and these suckers are BRIGHT! I had to rotate both LED heads away from the camera to get this photo. Tomorrow, a helper will assist me with ripping out my existing "normal earthly" ceiling light fixture. I'm looking forward to that. :thumbsup

Hey, check out the Chinese writing on the yellow box. What does that say? What is that weird cartoon character?

The ceiling framework is up. Here I am test-fitting the 4 ceiling light boxes...
attachment.php

There is a lot more work to do up here. I will be doing some electrical work, then adding a round fan grille, and some other boxes with light holes in them. And I have some styrene on order to do some of the box details. It's getting there.
