Does anyone have reference showing the medical tricorder version of the sequence for the green array in the scanner pocket? I've seen other medical Mk VII replicas do left-to-right or right-to-left scrolling by pairs (1+5, 2+6, 3+7, 4+8, repeat), rather than outwards from center but can't remember when it is visible in the show to verify. There are a couple of screen used medical tricorder videos on youtube but I haven't found one that shows the green array.

I'm sure I've seen it go centre outwards, but suddenly can't find reference.

It is definitely center-out on the science version so perhaps that is what you saw? Or it could be on some/all medical as well but I'm not sure.

First and second season (using the Mark VI Medical) had the 8 green LEDs in the scanner pouch going from the middle outwards (4+5, 3+6, 2+7, 1+8, repeat). All Mark VII Medical tricorder scenes from 3rd season on were 1+5, 2+6, 3+7, 4+8, repeat. All Mark VII Science tricorders run from the center outwards (4+5, 3+6, 2+7, 1+8, repeat).

I would swear blind that I've seen MkVII medicals go centre out - but it's been years (well over a decade) since I really watched TNG in any detail so I'm prepared to be wrong. Gerry's post below is pretty comprehensive. It could even have been in DS9/Voyager for all I know. Dread to think how long it would take to find out...

Edit - a quick look shows that one of them in Generations and Interface has 2 static lights in the array, as though stick mid motion, but nothing to back up my claim.

In my research to get the new Mark VII Medical electronics designed I watched about a dozen episodes of TNG. Every show I watched from the 1st and 2nd season showed the LEDs going from the center outwards. But every show I watched from season 3 onwards had the other pattern. There may have been some instances where the tricorder did run from the center outwards, but I have not seen them yet.

All of my original Mark VII Medical boards had the LEDs going center out. Roddenberry used a lot of my boards in the beginning and then switched to another supplier.

The new Mark VII Medical boards will have the correct sequencing pattern: 1+5, 2+6, 3+7, 4+8, repeat.

This run is fast approaching the "Sold Out" stage. Only 5 sets left. It does not mean you can never get one of these sets of electronics, it just means you will have to wait for the next run, which should occur by October.

Ha! The centre-out bit is my favourite thing about the Mk VIIs... better look into a science at some point then.

I do like the centre out too, but there is so much variety in that scanning array.
I could be wrong but I'm sure there was an episode where they were static.
I recall on DS9, Bashir frequently used the Medical Tricorder without the scanner in the front pocket in the 1st couple of seasons maybe "Passenger" in Season 1 and maybe "Babel", that might be another source for screencaps!
Oh and not forgetting Season 1 of Voyager!
So many options.

Yes, the green scanner LEDs in the pouch will go from left to right. If the lights were labeled from left to right as 1 - 8, they would light as follows: 1 & 5, 2 & 6, 3 & 7, 4 & 8, repeat.

The "medical Tricorder" scene from Caretaker pt1 where the EMH is introduced has the centre out scanning pattern on the Mark VII Medical Tricorder.

Thanks! I checked the episode and sure enough it does have the center-outward scan pattern. I know that there was a version that ran the pattern like that but it was rarely seen outside of the early seasons of TNG. If I did not know better I would think there were two hero versions used during filming. But Voyager adopted the Mark IX/X series of tricorders sometime in season 2 or 3.

If there were a way for me to allow the user to select the pattern they wanted i would incorporate it into the electronics. But right now I have to go with one or the other.
