So you think they added a strip around the bottom leather? The leather IS embossed on the original bottle, but you wouldn't easily see it once it was painted matte black, with the gold script.

No, I think they added a strip on the bottle itself that was supposed to be under the leather. It only shows when Odo lifts the bottle by the neck and it comes slightly out of the leather.
As for the gold script, I can't shake the feeling that the 'alien' writing at least partly follows the original embossed lettering, just because that would make it easier to paint.

I concur on the idea that the script on the leather follows the original embossing. It would be an easy way to assure that the 'font' kept a uniform height.

Couple of points / advice before you guys convert.
The leather is not painted matte black. It is a shade of purple / lilac. I suggest you print one of the screencaps or the reference from the Art of Star Trek book and take it with you to a hardware store that mixes paints.
Compare it to the shades of purple in the paint book sample the store would have, and get a small can of it. Also buy a black and a white mixing concentrate. They are usually very small bottles.
Start by testing a small patch on the underside of the bottle to see what it would look like. Then just add, in very small incremental quantities, black or white drops to the mix to lighten or darken it as necessary and would look good actually painted on the leather.
With regards to the embossing on the original leather, and as said, it will definitely vanish / fade substantially with the paint.

Lilac? I'd assumed a warm grey, because of how it changes when the light is strong, but I'll accept lilac.
