I agree – it's CGI. Super hard to tell, but the noise inside the open end of the left of the top image gives it away.

Yep, all very nice concept images. Matt is a really nice guy. He's from Bristol here in the UK. What they did do though was make a practical prop of the crystal chamber inside which was very cool! Had a green crystal originally but then changed to yellow hehe.
