Spider-Man 4 dropped, franchise being rebooted

I don't consider Nolan's Batman as reboots.
I never considered the previous films as true Batman films myself.

Mask of the Phantasm being the exception.

Like they loved the reboot/remake of Batman, not once but twice - even with villains we just saw on the big screen a few years earlier. Not really an old film itself.

Batman was done in 1989 and remade in 2005. that's 16 years.

Spiderman was done in 2001 and is now being remade in 2010 :confused

What we have here are people who rely on the bang of opening weekends - same way the comic book industry used to reply on putting out new titles so people would do anything to get issue number 1. Or when they would change a costume, do multiple covers --

If you believe for one minute that Sony and Raimi parted ways because Sony wanted to make a better film - not a chance.

It's really amazing when you look at it like that. The non-comic industry is rapidly falling in step with the old comic industry of the mid 90s. I liked some of the looser fare back then, multiple X-Men "re-imaginings" and such. I grew out of it. Eventually that industry seems to have imploded. Things look scaled back. No more holo-covers, no more multiple releases of the same things.

Maybe Hollywood will reach the same implosion point.

I can't remember the title, but i do remember a comic coming out that had been shot with a bullet. Each cover had a hole through the center and it said on the cover "With an authentic bullet hole!" :lol

Some gimmicks not even I would have bought then. I was a bigger Hulk fan than anything. Peter David could pen a mean hulk story that would keep me coming back for more. As more of the creative teams left the titles I liked, I saw the stories taking a nose dive. I bailed.

I can see many parallels in myself then and now in my collection and movie watching. There are times that I really like watching some of what Hollywood has been dishing out. "Sound and fury, signifying nothing". I am noticing that those times of me going to see a movie that has a story that will bring me back to view it at the theater multiple times are falling to the wayside. Look at Avatar for example. The one reason I want to see it again is to see the FX I may have missed in my initial viewing. Not the story.

Ah well. Here's hoping things improve.

Spider Man was the most anticipated film of my life, hoping it would live up to the comics. I was completely disappointed, based on casting, writing, and directing. The visuals were up to par but I suddenly didn't give a rip about my favorite character. That is a BAD sign. MJ was so bad that I wanted her to die. Tobey is said to have played a great Peter Parker and nothing in me agrees with that on any level. I suppose I had a much different experience reading the comics as I grew up and the Parker that Tobey portrayed was as lifeless as they come for me. I had more fun reading the comic than seeing the film, by far. The sequels were more of the same for me and I wasn't even aware of the story because the casting was so wrong in my opinion. The story could have been brilliant and I wouldn't have noticed. I was too wrapped up in wishing the cast were replaced. I am all for a reboot. Oddly enough, I always loved the idea of a young Ryan Reynolds being spidey because he has the ability to play spunky and witty and likeable, and his face/appearance is closer to what I see in the comics as Parker, but he's way too tall, and suddenly he is appearing in a TON of comic book movies. At the time I pictured him he hadn't even been in Blade3 yet. I think now that ship has long since sailed. I'm very curious to see who they put into the role. Tobey and Drunkst will NOT be missed as far as I'm concerned. I have never been a fan of Raimi either. I'm ready for something new.

The fact that Avi Arad ... the man who argued with Rami that Spidey stopping a runaway train did nothing but slow down the movie...

Is this true? I'll admit, I still nearly tear up during that scene. Yeah, there are hokey moments, but this one for whatever reason really gets me.

I expected #4 to suck because it'd suffer from sequelitis and the More+Bigger = Better fallacy. I don't expect the "reboot" to be all that much better, honestly. Frankly, I always found the "Peter Parker in high school" stuff to be lame anyway.

I guess it stops the repetitiveness of same-old same-old sequels.....There's only so many buildings Spiderman/Toby can swing around before it gets a little samey....
But I agree its far too soon to be reworking the very basis that gave them a successful Spiderman movie franchise in the first place.
Like was mentioned earlier, a 'New Bond' is normally a good thing. Batman just kept getting naffer with each film, so that franchise was 'saved' by Nolan.
Wonder what the new costume will be like ....

There is one thing I would have to insist on though.
Could they please keep Peter's Landlords' daughter in it, the shy blond Polish (?) girl. She / the actress was delightful ;-)

It's too much of a cash cow for Sony or Disney or whoever the hell owns it to just walk away.

Sam is out, good for him, he'll do something better. I'd rather see 10 films in the caliber of Drag Me to Hell than another single stinker like Spidey 3.

And, yeah, the studio no doubt will hire some hack writers and director to generate some moderate-budget mess that will appeal to the teen or even tween crowd and still make decent money. With the success of Twilight I'm surprised they don't bring vampires into it. Hey, who knows.... At the least they'll hire some pretty boy to be Spidey.

At least there are 2 good Spidey films to go back to. This thing could have been a train wreck from the gitgo if not for Raimi.

1 and 2 were good movies. 3 could have been good if they could get rid of emo-Pete, especially doing that ridiculous walk down the street.

Now if the rumor is true about a highschool reboot, I foresee a Spider-Man meets Smallville train wreck. He'll get bitten by a bug, sloooooowly figure out his powers and we'll only see hints of the iconic suit. Maybe we'll see him taking a Home Ec. class to learn how to sew or going down to Michael's to pick out bolts of fabric. We'll probably get one or two scenes of him wearing that sweatpants getup from the first movie. I doubt we'll see anything heroic in the first one.

I don't see this movie going anywhere good.

My Spiderman is from the great John Romita Sr years. All the posters and comics I had were drawn by him.

And to me John Cusack, when he was younger, was born to play ol' webhead. He had the looks and the attitude.

How would that affect it's CGC rating? :lol I think I'd want to do a comic book where every issue has a bent spine and an authentic coffee mug stain.

This actually occurred to me last night when it was announced about the parallel between the movies and comics. It's the reason I stopped buying comic books. I got really big into Superman comics but it only lasted a couple of years before guest appearances, cover variants and all the other gimmicks started wearing me down.

It really is about the opening weekend now for movies. Nothing else matters. I'm sure they hope for a good movie for the sake of higher profits but as long as the opening weekend receipts are good, everything else seems peripheral.

I was thinking about it based on some of the other posts and I guess I could think of Batman 3 & 4 both as "reboots" in a sense because they didn't really follow the Tim Burton movies. They're kind of under the radar reboots though because they are considered sequels even though they really aren't.

So, I dunno, maybe I'm complaining for no good cause. Never thought I'd complain about superhero movies at least considering it's my favorite genre/subgenre.

As long as they don't try to turn it into "Spider-Man: Twilight" which is what the press release makes it sound like.

woah woah woah!!! Wait A MOment! Can anyone tell, if am stuck in a universe, where every tv or movie series are either remade, reimagined, reboot and retconned?
Am I hanging in a time loop or something?

I am totally against a reboot! Only that no.3 sucked, Sony says: "Ah scrap it! We'll start from the beginning, people are so dumb, they won't notice it..."

I'm in for a petition to continue with the current cast - never change a winning team - give Raimi freedom to conceptualize the story everyone wants to see.

I think they should go for Peter Porker and Spider-Ham. Now those were some great comics. :)
