Sculpting ol Shell Head - costume

I probably should introduce myself. I'm a college student in Laguna Hills. I love sculpture and costumes.

Ok got that out of the way "Whew!"... LOL

Here's a couple photos of some works in progress. Unfortunately I completely ran out of clay and money :(

But I do have a few questions to ask everybody...

1. the dimensions of the Iron man helmet. Mine looks a bit fat and I don't want it to be inaccurate.

2. how do I properly hinge this bugger once I finish it and cast it? Mask and armor. I know his armor is overlapping. I dread having to sculpt the under suit, then each individual overlapping piece. That will take forever if not an eternity with my full time college and part time work schedule, not to mention all the homework :confused

Thanks for any feedback guys :)

check robo's pepakura iron man thread. its got a lot of info in the latter pages about hinge systems, and you can download the pepakura viewer and a pep helmet to get the right dimensions in millimeters.

Pepakura is essentially hig h tech paper craft. It's a computer program that takes 3D shapes, and "unfolds" them in order to make flat files that you can print, cut, fold, and glue together to make the object in real life.

Generally you use a 110 lb cardstock for printing onto, and use fiberglass resin on the outside to strengthen it before using fiberglass and resin on the insider. Then a nice skim coat of auto body filler (sometimes simply referred to by the brand name Bondo) and sand that until smooth. And VOILA! You have your helmet/armor/whatever.

Plenty has been written on the subject so do a search if you're interested in finding out more.
