Screen accurate Jurassic Park Barbasol can 11oz

I know this questions has probably been asked many many times but Does anyone know where I can buy a reasonably priced vintage shaving cream can from the 70s-early 90s BEFORE they changed the can shape to the tapered top part? I am doing aJurassic Park prop project and needed to replicate the Barbasol can in that film. I would prefer Barbasol 11oz can but will take ANY 11oz can with the same shape as I know Colgate and other brands had the exact same shape. If someone can point me the right way, I would really appreciate it.

I only need the can and not the inside mechanism. I have tried Ebay and Google search and shopping around but the only vintage cans I see are rusted out and unusable.

I realize you're new here but considering what this forum is about, did it cross your mind that there are easily over 100 people looking for the exact same thing? I suspect those individuals are keeping this information close to the vest (I know I am) and would REALLY be reluctant to share with someone who registers just to get what you need then disappear. But hey, I could be completely wrong and you could get lucky.

Good luck.

Well, I actually registered 3 months ago because prop building started becoming a hobby of mine. But I am a longtime member of the same RPF community on Facebook (over a year) and yes, I do realize that hundreds of others may be seeking the same thing. But I have to respectfully disagree with you on most keeping that info close to their vest. First of all, its a community and I have encountered many people on the RPF Facebook group who were more than happy to help point the way to me for where they obtained their screen accurate cans. I'm pretty sure not everyone is guarded and some are very helpful. Isn't that the whole purpose of these groups? To share what our experiences are and to help others get started and do the same? Again, maybe I am relatively new to the online forum but aren't most of the people here also on the RPF Facebook group? And really? I get how rare these cans are but how many do you possibly need for yourself unless you are a seller and not just building for yourself? I know if I found a can, I'd gladly share where if anyone asked and I know others have already shared where they found theirs with me. (just so happens theyre not up for sale.) And that goes for veteran posters and newbies alike. The point is, I feel keeping that info to yourselves kind of defeats the entire purpose of this group since any of us can just reach out to manufacturers, antique shops, eBay, specialists, and many others if we were desperate to find it. I guess I was just misguided into thinking that a shared interest would promote sharing. I assume I am kind of being looked at because I am a new poster to this forum (although not on RPF Facebook) but again, why does that matter? If we all love prop building, why not help? We can find info on YouTube or parts on eBay. Maybe some feel as you but I feel there are many more I've encountered who are more than willing to help out and share. I definitely will. Again, I say all this from my own opinion and with all due respect. I guess I could be wrong, after all. Regards!

Hah! No, you are completely correct this website should be about sharing techniques and information. The old timers here do seem to have become somewhat jaded as the website has become more popular and people are far less likely to divulge their sources and information. The problem is the number of people who sign up to ask a question and then disappear. Not saying this is the case for you, it’s just a pattern that seems to be repeated a lot.

With regard to your query: I’m afraid I’m not familiar with the perfect Jurrassic Park Barbasol can, but is it possible to re-wrap a less accurate can to make it look correct? Is this a project you could take on and share with us? I’m sure a lot of people would be grateful to find a solution to this problem.

I think it is possible to re-wrap a less accurate newer can with the tapered top. I know Paul Elder supplies the decals for almost nothing on Etsy (.87 cents USD, I believe). I've had a few people actually PM me some places I can find the screen accurate can so I think I will probably go with that as that make the can itself screen accurate so all I would have to do now is empty it, cut out the bottom part using a safe can opener, file it down, and wrap Paul's screen accurate decal around the can itself. Then I'd be all set. I know there are some Youtube videos on how this is done that have been displayed on the RPF Facebook group....

I saw this thread and knew I had a Barbasol can buried somewhere in the downstairs bathroom. Is this the can many people are looking for? I just took a pic of it next to my replica prop. Looks pretty similar to me, but I don't have the eye for detail that some of you do. It's filled with shaving cream. I don't think I've had it since the 90s, but knowing me, who the hell knows...

I'm also looking for the correct can. The correct can look identical to the one everyone is familiar with but without the tapering where the sides meet the top rim.

As stated by thomp, your can is a much later model and has the curved edge up top. The correct can had straight sides from top to bottom.

I believe you, but as I sit here and watch that scene, I still can't see the difference. It might be a blessing that I don't have such a discerning eye for detail, lol.

Not to hijack this thread, but does anyone have an idea where to get an accurate can?

Another easy way to tell if it's the correct can is to look for the website. If it says 'www.barbasol.com' anywhere on the can, it's not screen accurate. The website was added to the can about two years after JP came out, the screen used cans don't have the website on it. (The website didn't exist during the filming of the movie...)

I have two Rylo cans and one Nicksdad can, and I've been looking for a vintage screen accurate can since they started making the replicas... And I have yet to find one.
Actually found a green one that was from the right time (the menthol one), wish I had grabbed that... But I wanted the red/blue one...
I can find them from the 70s, and from the late 90s (right after they added the taper to the top), but the 80s and early 90s are oddly elusive....
