Scarlet Spider (Ben Reilly) first-time build WIP

Okay...I've been lurking for the past few weeks, trying to absorb as much information as I could before venturing into my own build. I wanted to build something from scratch before moving on to a full-blown template pattern, so this is my documented journey into the world of Cosplay/Costume buidling.

The project began as a Halloween project for my son, but I realize it will not be ready by then. So, I plan on having this done for his birthday as a surprise. Spider-Man is his favorite character, but since he dresses up as Spider-Man when we play I am not allowed to be the ol' webslinger. What's the next best thing? Scarlet Spider -- Ben Reilly, not the angry, more aggressive Kaine version (no offense to the Kaine fans).

As I stated above, I wanted to build something from scratch before moving on to an actual template by one of the many pattern designers on the forum. I will confess: I'm enjoying myself and the community so much that I have already purchased the Scarlet Spider (Reilly) pattern from Sonjou's 4NeoDesigns website. I plan on getting it printed on FoD sometime before the end of the month.

Any way, I purchased a morphsuit from Superfan Suits and a Carolina Blue hoodie from Jiffy Shirts.

Hoodie with sleeves removed.

Displaying the Hoodie and Morphsuit together...(yeah, I could lose a few pounds!)

BTW: I'm wearing shorts under the morphsuit in an effort to keep the twig and berries out of the photo!

This is the belt from the above pic of me in the morphsuit and hoodie. It's a standard US military pistol belt (Coyote Brown color) that I purchased on eBay for close to $6.00. I liked it because it has the clip in the front. I'm going to figure out a way to sculpt a Scarlet Spider buckle from Sculpey and attach it to the clip to complete the look. I wasn't too thrilled with the color, but I'm also contemplating some Rid to dye it to a more brownish tint.

I also liked the small holes along the belt, which I thought would come in handy when attaching the cylinders to the belt. At least I'm hoping that they come in handy!

Oh...almost forgot. This is the logo I designed using MS Paint while wasting time at work the other day...

I'm still trying to decide if I want to airbrush it on to the hoodie or cut the logo out of foam and glue it on. I guess my biggest fear is the smearing and bleeding of the paint... any suggestions?

And finally, these are the first three attempts at sculpting my own eye frames. The first set were rather thick, using Goosebots design.

This is my third attempt, using Rebz design (which I took the liberty to slightly modify). I was generally pleased with the shape and thickness of my second attempt, but I broke one of the frames during transfer from cutting surface to baking surface...so this is the third attempt. I also increased the size. They are HUGE!

That's as far as I've come so far. I do have a pair of beach shoes coming from Amazon and two long wooden dowel rods to make the wrist cylinders. I still need to get some red elastic for the wrist bands to attach the wooden dowels after I cut them. Still unsure of how to make the cylinders for the belt.

Also, my mesh is on order. I have a bunch of different types coming because I simply wasn't sure which way to go. Trial and error I guess. So...while I'm waiting for that to arrive, I will begin sanding down my eye frames so I can cast them in silicone to make urethane frames instead of plastic or sculpty. Apparently the urethane is a little easier to bend? Guess I will find out.

Looking forward to your build. Already subbed. check out my scarlet spider build too

Yep. Yours has been one of the threads I've been looking at for ideas. It's the one that gave me the idea to use a Spider-Man mask as a face shell. Unfortunately I have a head about as big as John Travolta's, so I don't know how that will work. I plan on going to Walmart this weekend to check them out.

For the frames, try and use a splatter screen at the dollar store. Use two layers and put them in 90 degree angels. They work like a charm. :)

Looks great so far man. I've been looking into making my own Scarlet Spidey, but I'd like to have a removable mask. Any suggestions?

Very cool looking suit so far man :) I'm really liking the belt you've used in particular.
Any updates per chance?

are you going to make ankle pouches with it? if so you could buy leatherette from somewhere(like fabricland) and wrap and sew it around cardboard.
anyways it looks great, keep it up :)
