Sandworm from Beetlejuice--need some input

I'm thinking of making a sand worm (head only) to go over the a/c duct (large industrial kind) which would be the body. So that when the a/c is on, the air will push a ribbon or some fabric around acting as the tongue, if that makes any sense at all.

What should I use? i was thinking paper mache as it needs to be light. Also thinking of using a large balloon underneath to get the initial head shape. Any tips or pointers? i haven't paper mache'd since I was a kid.

Hmm..
I would say build the structure out of wire hangers. Then paper mache over that. You will then have full control over the way the mouth and everything is shaped.

I think a wire mesh frame,armature wire and Super sculpty or Apoxie Sculpt would be better.You can build it in sections and assemble later/as you go.
