Rubies vs. Hasbro Vader helmet sizes? Scratch building pics

Anyone have or seen both together? Any difference in the size?

My boys have the Rubies with voice changer in the chest box. I see Hasbro also has an Ultimate vader Kit, that includes a helmet w/voicechanger, cape and saber.

I'm jsut curious if this Hasbro one is any smaller in size- as the Rubies is still pretty large for my 3.5yr old.

I don't know what to do for his helmet once I finish the rest of the costume.

I have an idea, but it's quite a bit of work and trying to avoid if possible.

If you've seen the Vader halloween pails for collecting candy, we have two of those so I ripped one apart.

Cut the bottom out of it to fit his neck and separated the halves. I cut the eyes out, and the faceplate will fit perfectly to his face. However, I'd have to extend the width and fill in some gaps on the sides and then also create a dome for the top. I do have a plastic kids armor helmet that I think would work good- but again, it's just the time in doing all of this, bonding, adding the small mohawk detail on top, painting, blah blah blah.. can be done, but....... looking for easy way out :love

Re: Rubies vs. Hasbro Vader helmet

well.. f it. Just decided to get going.

Started with a halloween buck for collecting candy. It's in 2 peices, so I split it apart. Cut bottom out to fit the neck, and cut eye holes for a quick test to see if it was too small or not. Back up plan was to cut it and do a Vader revealed lower peice he could wear.

One Bucket uncut, one split and eyes quickly cut for test:

Had this cheap kids helmet with face guard (old Knight armor type helmet). Stipped off the face mask part and cut the dome down. Zap gap and a few rivots to hold in place:

Still need a few strip to cover the side gaps up, then add the mini mohawk detail from front to rear, some bondo, sanding and painting.. got a chore a head of me, but I think it'll turn out pretty good.

And, my little one won't look like a feaking bobblehead.

Heres a quick pick next to the boys Rubies/Hasbro whatever it is with the voice changer in the chest box. Chest box is ripped off, as I'm modding that with light for his costume.

I think this is awesome. I love that you are going out of your way to make your kids costume the best Vader in the neighborhood. Love it.

We have the voice changer helmet and box too.

This is an interesting approach. I have to say I'm looking forward to your progress shots to see how it turns out.

it's going to be interesting, that's for sure. Decided to stop by the thrift store on the way home, just to see what I could find. Got a pair of used sunglasses with a redish orange tinted lense. $.99 find, and they work perfect for the helmet. Taped them up inside, just to take a look. Will have to wait until I get this thing together and painted before I put them in permanently.

I was thinking last night, and I think some of those "for Sale" signs will be just about the perfect thickness to cover the gap on the sides near the ears. Thats flexible enough, that I think I can wrap most of the outside of the helmet where the dome buts up to.. that way it'll smooth things out and will be less bondo-age.. Just to cover the seams and smooth it out.

still a ways to go, but I think this should turn out pretty good once done.

More pics as it comes a long. I should grab one quick of the lenses taped in and put that up.

back in a flash.

I assume you mean the Rubies Deluxe vs Hasbro voice changer in the original post? Because I have both the Rubies 'Supreme' and the Hasbro, and the Supreme makes me look like a bobble head if I'm not wearing any armor with it. The Hasbro voice changer its slightly small for my adult head, but bearable, I cannot imagine the Rubies Deluxe being any smaller.

Thanks. I'm not sure where I got it or thought it, but thought the Vader lid with voice changer in the chest box that we have was a rubies. Then saw one at toys r us the other day and it said hasbro. Then saw this ultimate kit that had a voice changer helmet, saber, and cape. I was original looking for the smallest "cheap" version out there. Or maybe the hasbro stuff is no different and from the same molds.

I'm now into the scratch build. Coming along with templates cut for the next layer to but up to the dome I added. But, then got side tracked in getting back to the belt and belt boxes.

very true.

I've combined photos and progress on the helmet as well as the costume into another thread, just to keep in one place.

Mods- feel free to delete this thread if you'd like. Thanks all for the comments so far! please check in on the other one as it comes along.
