Royal Imperial Guard/Emperors Royal Guard Helmet WIP

Be gentle! This is my first post here on the RPF. I lurk most of the time.

My best friend is joining the 501st and straight up purchased her RG helmet and had it professionally painted. I am testing myself with what I have learned over the last 2 years or so and am taking a stab at making my own guard helmet. Several reasons...1. I have a huge cranium. 2. I'm stubbord. 3. I want to see if my own work can cut the mustard.

This is a huge helmet. I mean HUGE!

I am taking my sweet time on this because I want it to be done correctly. I do have one hiccup so far...a mysterious out of place piece in the pep file I used that is buckling on one side. Which is circled in that friendly pink circle.

I rondo-ed the inside of the helmet for sheer laziness and ease and because the inside wasn't going to take the brunt of the wear a tear but the shoulder pieces where instead. The parts that touch the shoulders got an extra bit of attention with fiberglass and more resin.

Slowly but gradually its getting finished!

Nice build! Good point about the shoulders getting most of the wear, but might it be worthwhile putting some cloth down inside just in case of an unexpected drop or bumping into something?

Its very very far from finished. I have to line the inside with face friendly material because having the rondo right on my face is not fun and won't be fun in hot weather. I will probably add a rubber lip around the bottom part where it sits on my shoulders after everything is said and done. Along with an extra layer of something around the base where it sits on the shoulders.

Looking good and coming along nicely.

I've also got one of these pepped and waiting for the rondo and fibreglass phase. I once tried on a modified Don Post fibreglass version - one of Mardon's from the Philippines, I think - and found that even without a visor suffocation will be a concern. I think fans alone won't cut it, as they will just circulate the air inside. At this stage I'm planning a forced air system with a fan blowing fresh air in through a tube from somewhere under the robes. So just wondering what you have planned for ventilation?

Regards, Phil

Yes, suffocation is a big issue with these helmets! There is a guy on the forcepike forums that has used a tubing system that runs from his belt under his robes up through the back of the helmet (under the robes) and uses mini air conditioners that are battery powered to help cool and circulate air.

I also just had someone blatantly point out my helmet is grossly miss shaped. Meaning that the bottom is very disproportionate and stretched and the sides at the shoulders aren't wide enough. :( I don't know how I missed this and any suggestions on how to fix it? Maybe add another section to the side to even it out?

No fun to realize what you were doing is completely wrong LOL. Its true though and I can admit my mistakes. I really wish I could have gotten in contact with the person who did the incredible RG helmet pep. To no avail. He wouldn't even take my money!

i think not all is lost you can make a shadow guard with that helmet... or a Kir Kanos/Canor Jax one

So here we have is v2.0 thanks to Blaxmyth for helping me with the files!! Taking a lot of time on this next version because I think if I have to pep this again I might go mad. o_O

I built little supports on the inside to help smooth out the harder edges and bends so it will save me a lot of sanding and forming and headache later on. It was also to help the helmet hold its shape once the resin goes on. I'm not done reinforcing it just yet but this is the first round of adjustments.

The pictures of the visor specifically were BEFORE I put the braces in to make it the correct shape.

As simple as Pepakura is in concept, it is an amazing tool in establishing the groundwork for projects. The v2.0 mask is gonna be spot on, no doubt. Keep at it.

how did you get on with the rest of that build?

I am looking for the same helmet pep files for next years comicon season, and pointers as to the author?

Saw this bumped up near the top of the thread listings. Just wanted to take a second to say that this looks like it was coming along nicely and also that popsicle stick braces for pepakura is a fantastic idea! I'm really glad that I stopped in here to check out this build, and thanks for sharing it! :D
