Rotary multi tools...???

Hey guys, I've started to fibre glass my Pep Iron Man helmet and once its done I'll be doing a coat of auto filler before painting it... once that's done, I'll be cutting off the faceplate so I've been looking at rotary multi tools online and have found a GMC DEC003AC for £17

GMC DEC003AC 135 W Multi Function Rotary Tool

and a rotocraft one for £25

Halfords | Rotacraft Variable Speed Mini Rotary Tool Kit

I know there's better ones out there but I'm trying to do it as cheap as possible as it'll probably not be used more than a couple of times on this costume! (for now at least!) Can any of you wonderful people give me any advice? will either of these be suitable and has anyone used them and have any reviews - good or bad?

Thanks!!

Re: Fibreglass helmet help? Rotary multi tools???

Look ok to me. I bought a non-dremel one around 8(?) years ago and it's still going strong. What would be good is to get a diamond coated cutting wheel, try ebay they're very reasonable and last a long time. The cutting wheels generally provided with these types of tools are pretty bad and tend to shatter in no time at all. Also stock up on spare sanding drums.

dremel and nothing else. they are proven and quality tools. had many crap ones before. this one if great.

Thanks Blipper, I'll have a look. I'm more inclined to go for the £25 Halfords one. it has ok reviews and it's only gonna be cutting fibreglass thats a couple of mm think with a thin layer of auto filler on it - and that one comes in a nice case!!

a rotary tool is not a throwaway, its an investment. I suggest a dremel 4000 with a hose extension tool, and possibly a dremel drill press kit that also works as a mini workshop to hold your dremel while you use the extension tool. the only other option i see is that other brand you can get at lowes, the black and red one.

I've still got my nice case, I don't think I've ever put it back in it though :D
Halford's stuff is pretty good imo, even if their service is lacking. If you're hacking up fibre-glass definitely get a respirator or at least a dust mask (and hold your breath a lot!) - I was a bit thoughtless when I started out - fibre-glass dust can be pretty evil when there's a cloud of it.

Already on it! :-D I got a respirator before I started with the resin and I did it outside too. I think the Halfords one should be ok for what I'm doing... I know a more expensive one will obviously be better but I don't want to spend too much on something I'm going to use probably once a year!

B&Q do a nice Ryobi kit for under £50, I know that's a bit more than your budget but it comes with all the accessories you'll ever need including the flexi (and a clamp/hook thing to hang it on whilst using the flexi). Certainly makes it more accurate to use (especially if you've not used one before).
