Ridley Scott Prometheus: NOT the Alien Prequel Details

It's not a revelation, it's been visible in stills too. To be honest I thought we were all across this one!

Carson has also mentioned previously that neither the ship nor the planet are the same; this planet is known as LV233.
It's a revelation if it's your first time seeing it.

It has been stated in this thread several times that it is not the same ship, engineer, or chair in the pilot/astrogation room from Alien, and that is very obvious if you simply compare them. Unfortunately most of the posts about those subjects seem to be "bash Ridley" posts from people who want to believe they are, and that the film makers simply screwed up matching the look.

Seems many people would rather believe the latter.

Something to keep in mind is the Ridley said that not only was this not a direct prequel to Alien with regards to the storyline, but he also said early on that this was not even the same universe, so think about that.

Notice the discription "Filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the science fiction genre, directing Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender as members of a space exploration team probing the origins of life on a nightmarish planetoid where, years later, the ill-fated spaceship Nostromo would land."

I assume a mistake on their part....

Ive been hearing rumors that Ridley and Fox are at odds regarding the rating of the film.

Has this been confirmed, I thought the film already had a final rating?

It's things like this that force me to keep an open mind, but yer most likely right. LV233 is being bandied around as an official thing.

Fingers still a bit crossed, because it isn't as if stupider changes haven't been made in post on other projects.

There is no way Fox will release a film this expensive with an R rating. Scott was hoping to get away with PG13, but even Alien would not get a PG13 these days. He would have had to cut out the whole chest burster scene. Scott saying negative things about the MPAA in the past few days means he is not getting a PG13 without serious cuts, and he is pissed.

We will always have the eventual "directors cut" on BR, but I would love to see this film intact in theaters. Fox should try a dual rating release. Mass release PG13, and select release for an R cut. I think they would actually make even more money doing this.

I'm not terribly well versed in the Alien universe. I've seen the original a couple times (and just recently kinda half-rewatched the original at work)... I've been hoping to sneak in another viewing (or two) before the release of Prometheus.

It's nice to read some of the info in this thread to give me a heads-up of what to look for and pay special attention to... and I've hopeful that we can keep the spoilers covered up.

Prometheus has become the 'it' movie for me this year (with Avengers a very close second), even though I'm not a terribly huge Alien fan... so hope are very high.

Not sure I would believe that. That article is from today and the guy says it has not been sent to the MPAA.

This article, and many others from 6 days ago, indicate it has been submitted and Ridley is not happy with the MPAA, meaning they gave it an R. He wanted a PG13, so they are likely debating cuts, or no cuts. Either way, it will be Ridley's choice, as it sounds like he has final cut.

Ridley Scott typically shoots (or edits) two movies: the theatrical cut and the home entertainment cut. Both are "Ridley's cuts" even though the ratings may differ.

Given the tone and content I just can't see Prometheus snagging anything other than an R.

this was not even the same universe, so think about that.

I guess I'm confused. What I had gathered from following this thread was that it was originally thought that this was not a prequel but that recent revelations have made it clear that it is indeed a prequel of sorts or at least very much in the same universe and that future installments will likely lead closer into the original film. Do you mean not in the same system as LV426?

Except that it's not really a fossil that we saw. It's a suit.
A bio mechanical suit :) Ridley said back in 1979 that it is not clear that the thing in the chair had become ossified by time or was always an organic part of the craft. I suspect the "suit" becomes a biological part of the wearer, just as the chair become a biological part of the being who sits in it.

Something to note is that in the original draft for Alien they take the head of the alien in the chair back to the ship with them as proof of another intelligent culture. That's exactly what we see them doing in one of the Prometheus egg-pod chamber photos and in the trailer - discovering the engineer/jockey head on the ground and later examining it in the lab. Funny thing to do for something that is just a helmet for a suit.

I was confused by that comment too. But I'm not holding my breath or quoting that for holding any weight. Imma just wait until the release and judge for myself. ;)

Honestly, I don't think a R rating would really hurt this film at all. Not this particular film. Something like The Avengers? Yeah, but not this.. people expect this to be a dark and nasty film, and it seems that the main audience for this film are adults anyway.. I don't see a lot of teeny-boppers going to see this one on release weekend. I bet 95+% of the opening weekend audience is 17 or older, and would have gotten in anyway.

The MPAA does have some serious issues, I don't disagree with Ridley there. And, like the author of the first article, I really don't want to have to see a watered down, heavily edited version of the film in theaters just so they could get a PG-13 rating. Especially if "the" scene has to be cut. From the sound of it, that's the equivalent of cutting the chestburster scene from the original just to secure a lower rating for the kiddies to get in and see a film that's clearly not for them in the first place.
