Restoring a EE TPM Obi Saber - Props to "Oz!"

Several months ago, I purchased a TPM Obi-Wan Master Replicas lightsaber along with other lightsaber replicas from a member on the rebelscum forum. That seller, failed to produce what I had purchased and instead, sent me only one of the items I purchased in very rough condition. That one item, luckily, was the main lightsaber I had been hunting for, for years, the TPM Obi MR lightsaber. However, what I got was disheartening.

What he sent me was so bathed in cigarette smoke that the smell was all over the lightsaber as well as the packing material. It was dinged, dented, scuffed on certain portions and had rust spots throughout the saber. It also had a thick sticky gum like substance that was covered in hair and dust at the pommel of the saber. Between the grips and found in the grooves were also an odd blackish film that I could not take off with a q-tip. I do not know still if it was smoke or whatever else that had layered itself in between the lightsaber grips but it was difficult to try to remove. That seller failed to make things right and even deliver the other items I purchased so I was forced to file a paypal claim.

In the end, I was left with a clearly abused Elite Edition Obi-Wan TPM lightsaber and some bitterness that it was the 3rd negative transaction I had on the scummer boards in just a few months.

Some Before Shots Below (much worse and smellier in person):

Then, Ozwepaie sent me a message that he’d like to help “refurbish” the EE saber back to its former glory as a goodwill gesture from the forum after reading about my horrendous transaction. Ozwepaie or “Oz” was very well known through the forum for his custom lightsaber works, although I had never had any business with him, I had read countless threads of his great lightsaber productions and respectable business transactions with customers. I took a chance and sent him the lightsaber for reworking.

What I received back was astonishing. Oz had managed to remove some of the rust/slight pitting, smooth out the pommel, clean off the heavy scratches, dings, smoke residue, gunk, and bring it back to its former shimmering glory. Aside from the loss of the MR Trademark information on the pommel, it was as good as new and no horrid smell! He had cleanly disassembled the lightsaber, something I would have been too fearful to do for something so expensive, and get it back to the shine that fit the Elite Edition name of the lightsaber. I just need to hit the red button with a bit of paint and I’ll call it perfect once again.

For all the cruddy transactions I’ve been through lately where members treated me like their private bank, I am forever grateful for the help Oz has given me. The best part of the entire transaction with him? He actually kept me up to date on the progress of reworking the lightsaber, from the disassembling stage, to the final repaint. He turned a bitter transaction into something salvageable where I remembered why I enjoyed these forums so much…to be around people who shared the same love of the hobby. It might sound like I am just shilling for the guy and you know what? I am! He had helped me out so much; I had to put up this review to thank him for all of his hard work on the lightsaber. If anyone needs something similar done, feel free to pm me and I’ll forward you his contact information.

Here is just a sample shot of one of his lightsabers he made and sold awhile back to showcase his custom work, a Eeth Koth lightsaber and a Kit Fisto lightsaber right below it(if you do not want me to reuse the images Oz, just let me know and I’ll pull it down, just thought I’d give you all an example his actual work and not his repair work) :

Looks fantastic!

As far as the damage before, it looks like smoke damage from a fire. Smoke from a fire will coat everything with a thick gummy gunk, the gunk being material that has melted, as in plastics, furniture, etc. and is carried in the smoke and leaves that residue and an overpowering smell. In some cases you can't ever get rid of the smell. Glad it worked out for you.

I actually was told that by another member. What didn't make sense to me was the pitting in the emitter area that formed tiny little rust marks and then the damage to the pommel. It was during the holidays so I gave him a chance to make it right, which was another stupid mistake. Very happy it ended up working out though and all I had to do was cover shipping. If their is one thing that I've learned from my experience on the forums in 2012...is to be much more cautious and not get ripped off hundreds per transaction...something that has been happening more and more lately. Glad there are some decent members around though!

Looks like Oz did a great job. And that's awesome that he helped you out for free like that. This is what this forum should be about. Friends helping each other. It's nice to see some of the old RPF spirit is still alive!

I can attest to the terrible smell and condition that saber was in, as I very luckily received the saber I bought from the same seller. That saber looks totally awesome now. I'm glad you got it cleaned up so well!

Glad some good is happening to ya man! Especially with that awesome piece you have there. Hope the good luck continues with your other items and they come to ya in a semi quick manner.

Lol thanks, I hope so too. All I know is several members contacted me and told me the guy had the sabers he apparently sold to me, listed on craigslist and one of them bought some of them. I couldn't fault them for getting a good deal, just did not like how he straight up scammed me all telling me about how it made his kids x-mas.

It's such a shame to hear of the way that it arrived and how you were treated by that seller, but what Oz pulled off to restore it is truly wonderful work. A mostly happy ending and what sounds like a great new home for that Obi-EE!

Tony, Thanks so much for your kind words. It's was my pleasure. There has been so many"un reputable" guys in this hobby, that it's really changed that spirit of
why people started in the first place. And not even just, shady dealers. But even good guys, w/ good intentions. That become a victim of circumstance.
And are not cut out to handle the pressure of shelling disappointing news. Week after week... after week.
So they cut off communication. Start digging a hole, that turns into a grave. I've seen it over & over for yrs.
My heart gos out to the buyers & the sellers. I wish I could step in and bail out the maker and the customer. Every time I see it happen. But I don't the
means. And it sucks.
W/ Tony here, I just felt bad for him. And saw the opportunity to re-new a mans faith. I've always, from the time I got my first machine. Been all about
the "WoW!!" I could not wait to ship a saber, and listen to the excitement of my customer. The only regret I've ever had, was not being able to hand over
personally. Ever hilt I've made.
I love the whole (prop collecting) hobby, I love making sabers. So if I have the opportunity to recharge a collectors batteries? W/ something as simple as,
an act of kindness. I'm all over it !

That said. Tony. You're welcome.

Oz is a stand-up guy. I had the pleasure of buying a few sabers from him during my SW collecting days, and he always went above and beyond to make things perfect. It's nice to see that he offered to help you out, because that Obi saber really did look horrid (y)thumbsup:thumbsup
