Replicas You've Found but Passed On

Well, guys, I've decided to do another one of those posts about prop replicas. Sort of in the same vein as my "Prop Replicas you didn't know you have (sometimes until too late)," I have decided to propose a new question. Much like everyone else, I've looked around flea markets and thrift stores out of boredom or to occasionally trying to find something. And occasionally, I've found some items that are the same model and make as items seen in films. However, for one reason or another, I decided to pass it up. So, here's the question: have you guys ever found a replica that you decided to pass up on? And if so, what was the reason?

Here are a couple of recent ones I found, but passed on and the reasons why:

Igloo Cooler from "Crank: High Voltage"

Purpose of item in film: Carried the indestructible heart of Chev Chelios
Reason for passing: Not sure if the front design and overall size was the same when I came across it (even now, I'm not sure. But it is the primary reason). Plus, the cooler was molded in blue plastic, not red. (Additional Note: I went back to the store with the cooler, turns out its the same size, and is also a flip-top lid, but the front doesn't match.)

Sony Watchman FD-40 from "Rain Man"

Purpose of the item in the film: This brand of portable TV is purchased by Charlie Babbitt to give to his autistic brother Raymond so that he doesn't miss watching "The Peoples Court."
Reason for passing: Though the brand and model matched and the TV does work, I passed on it because of the fact that TVs are now using digital signals, and it would seem out of place to buy an analog portable TV even as a replica. However, I have considered on going back to the store and buy it (but since it was a few days ago that I went, I cannot remember if it is 100% exactly the same, but from the photo I've found, it looks like the one I found). (Additional Note: I went to the same store to see if they still had it, but they didn't.)

Nokia Communicator 9000 from "The Saint"

Purpose of the item in film: The primary phone used by Simon Templar to call clients and access his Swiss bank account.
Reason for Passing: First off, I wasn't sure of the color and model matched (to my surprise, I was right on both cases, as the phone I found was a metallic goldish color and the outside and inside keypad didn't have the same buttons). Also, a piece of the hinge was damaged, which was the primary reason for passing. However, I can swear that I've seen the inside keyboard and possibly the model of the phone I found in another film (I just can't place where).

So, how about you guys? Any replicas you've found but passed on? If so, why?

I saw one of those knock-off LOTR Sting swords at a flea market less then a month ago. It actually looked nice for the non-official piece, and they only wanted $25 for it.

I didn't buy it because I don't collect LOTR stuff, and because I didn't want to lug around a sword for the rest of the day.

I either like to set up huge displays with multiple props from individual movies or have plans to in the future, so the reason I often pass on a prop find or good deal is that I don't have a collection from that movie and probably won't start one.

I've passed on three different ceramic Pulp Fiction Kangaroos, not a big enough fan. Maybe after I find the watch.
I also found the seltzer bottle from The Raven Bar in Raiders sitting next to the set of shot glasses, in the globe thingy from Blade Runner. I already have the seltzer bottle and the shot glasses. But what are the chances of finding them both on the same shelf?

Both at Toys R Us, but not at the same time... A Master Replicas glowing "Sting" from LOTR (for under $15!) and one of the Friday the 13th Jason masks.

I passed on the official Buffy wooden stake replica even though I found it dirt cheap. I'm sorry, but it was the most nondescript pointy piece of wood ever. No matter how nice the box, it was just a stick to me.

I've passed on a few Graflexes, mostly because they were damaged, missing parts, in generally poor condition, or horribly overpriced.

I've pass on a ton of stuff because it was too expensive. The only time I really regret it though was the Master Replicas POTC compass. I was at a convention and they had one for $180. At the time I thought "*pbhf!* I'll just get one cheaper on eBay after the whole POTC thing dies down. Probably get it on MR's website for $150 or less when the time comes..."

The time never came...

A local convention had a Tom Baker autograph, a great looking machined Baker Sonic Screwdriver and a full size Baker era scarf in a bundle for $250.
I thought it was outrageously overpriced at the time and was like, "that sonic doesn't even light up and that scarf is 12 feet long! What the heck is this crap?"
Now I really wish I'd bought it.

I love the fact that we live in a world where you can find a totally awesome sword, but then pass on it because you'd have to carry it around all day.

I had an apartment that had one of the same deadbolt locks that were used on the door of Jerry's apartment on Seinfeld.

I really thought about replicating that apartment door and stealing that deadbolt, but I wanted my security deposit back.

nah don't feel bad , I have been to some many conventions where the doctors where there and thought " I hate the show" so i passed on everything. If memory serves , I was at the convention where that one doctor kicked off before the con...can't remember who it was.

I was offered the hero, live fire Korben Dallas gun from The Fifth Element. Twice.

Second time it was twice what the original seller wanted. oy!

I would have to say that fundage is my primary motivator for walking away. Typically, if I see a piece I have always wanted and the price is right, I would have no problem lugging it around all day/night/week.:lol Most of the heartache is limited to being eBay sniped, not being able to afford it, or being the victim of the JY curse.

There ARE a few movies I haven't had time to see. Don't throw anything, but I still have yet to see a POTC film or a LOTR movie. Part of it is that subconsciously, I know I am going to LOVE both series and it will probably cost a ton of money in collecting.:lol

I do have some regrets. I missed out on a few Trek screenused items (again, because of money), and I have been in situations where I was considering the same item by different makers and came to regret the choice.

Cool thread.

Over on the Aliens Legacy board there was a group purchase of metal military style dinner trays like those seen on the Sulaco.

I thought about it, but it was just too ordinary. I had to draw a line between a cool prop and everyday items.

^ Def. had this happen!

Typically, I prefer pieces that advance the plot, or heck, are even the focus of the film. Then there is the category of background pieces, and I tend to only invest in really recognizable ones.

This pretty much sums it up for me as well. If I had money coming out of my...ears...I'd probably have a hell of a collection (that nobody but me would appreciate, but still...). As it is, I have to pass on a lot of things I'd like to have in favor of the few I really want. Even the stuff I could normally afford always seems to come along when I'm broke. :unsure

Exactly!
