I first got involved in the world of prop building by building lightsabers. When I started out, I did not have any machinery common to prop builders such as a lathe. I had only hand drills, a sawzall, a hack saw, files, and my will power. Every line that I cut for the grips was done with a hack saw, so it is remarkable how straight they are. These were the first three lightsaber hilts that I made. I also made one for my friend which is not pictured here. I made these in high school. They did not light up or make sound. The blades were wooden dowels wrapped in coloured duct tape. However, my friends and I had plenty of fun dueling with them. The hilts themselves are made out of aluminum tubing, o-rings, plumbing parts, and screws.
