Recommendations on dyeing leather shoes? 'Can't stand red Aldens!

So I have my Alden boots, and I just don't think I can stand their reddish tint anymore.

I was wondering how easy it would be to dye them a browner color. Is it something that can be done at home? Or is this something I need to take to a professional?

Is there a certain process I should follow (e.g. do I need to remove the existing color before applying a new color?). Do I need to worry about masking off the soles of the boots? Do you have to seal them or anything when they're finished?

Any tips would be much appreciated!

I had changed the color of leather shoes a couple of times and it wasn't that difficult. Acetone was used to remove the polish, and, in one case, the color (But color removal may not happen every time). Apply the new shoe dye color after the acetone had dried away. Be sure to cover evenly or you'll end up with streaks. You shouldn't have to worry about masking off the soles. After the dye had dried, apply appropriate shade shoe polish to refinish.

I recommend practicing on an old pair of shoes or boots that you wouldn't miss before attempting the color change on the boots you want to keep. If your aren't satisfied with the results, you can still take them to you local shoe cobbler and have it done.
