re-titled thread: finishing GK flash hider?

Hey, all.

Just received an M9 flash hider bought off ebay (yes, I paid too much) for a scratch build Greedo Killer.

It arrived wrapped in what the seller described as "cosmoline wrapping." It is sticky and oily and disgusting. Sort of like motor oil-soaked onion skin paper. My first attempt to peel it off yielded little progress but copiously gloppy and stained hands. I will probably be washing my hands for a week!

Any ideas how to cut threw this crap and see what I actually bought?

Cosmoline - when it absolutely, positively can't be allowed to rust and you don't care about how messy it is when you take it out of 50+ years of long-term warehouse storage.

Get some latex/rubber gloves, a soft-toothed toothbrush that you don't want anymore, and some gun cleaner/solvent. Start scrubbing. Cosmoline is a pain in the ass. My SKS was covered butt-barreltip with the stuff.

I found quite a number of articles when I searched "Removing cosmoline" on google. Most of them were about firearms.

used in any military long term storage, guns, truck motors anything.
sticky as hell. gasoline or carb cleaner works good .

old military just dunked the guns in a barrel of gas / diesel mix.

Cosmoline is the nastiest stuff the government has ever come up with - and that includes agent orange.

I've had pretty good success cleaning it up with some simple green. Wipe/scrape the majority of the goo off and then soak the piece in a bucket of simple green. It should disolve the remnants of that primordial ooze.

Thanks for the many suggestions.

I have never used gun cleaner before. I am hesitant to use anything as vaporous as gasoline.

I'll try scraping it off as best I can, then soaking it in some simple green.

I expect that if that doesn't work, I can try something nastier.

Thanks again!

Re: sticky "cosmoline wrapping" on GK flash hider?

MEK kills that stuff!!! I used it on my OWK Booster and it took all of it off pretty easy!

MEK is harmful so be careful and protect yourself!!

Re: sticky "cosmoline wrapping" on GK flash hider?

Yeah, MEK is like cancer in a can. I don't use it.

I've inhaled enough toluene over my lifetime using adhesives that I'll probably croak in a day anyway, but I'm going to try to avoid MEK.

Thanks!

Think Goo Gone would work??

Re: sticky "cosmoline wrapping" on GK flash hider?

I would just get a toothbrush, a bunch of paper towels and some Palmolive.

Scrape and wipe off as much of it as you can then start scrubbing it with Palmolive and a toothbrush.

Sooner or later it will be clean!

I agree with the Simple Green/toothbrush method.
I wiped off what I could, then soaked it overnight and scrubbed the rest off. Worked good for me.

(in a redneck laugh) huhuhuhuhahahahuh

..................sisssy....:)

Re: sticky "cosmoline wrapping" on GK flash hider?

If the simple green were unsuccessful, I might try gun cleaner. It WAS part of a gun, after all. I assume I could get that at a KMart.

Out of curiosity, anyone know what the main ingredient of gun cleaner is? Is it something toxic like MEK? Acetone?

Is the flash hider bare metal under all that glop?

I'd go with the simple green...it's worked for me.

Re: sticky "cosmoline wrapping" on GK flash hider?

I used carb cleaner to cut it off my table saw.

Re: sticky "cosmoline wrapping" on GK flash hider?

yup if carb cleaner cant get it off then it needs to stay there.:lol:lol:lol

Re: sticky "cosmoline wrapping" on GK flash hider?

The grenade cup I purchased from a local dealer for my Jawa blaster was coated in the stuff too! This is only the second time I heard about it!

Simple Green is what the seller recommended for me and it worked like a charm.

Re: sticky "cosmoline wrapping" on GK flash hider?

Stand it on edge and then use a hair dryer to melt most of it away.

After a few minutes it will have a thin coating but it will be sitting in a puddle of the stuff.

If you let it sit there and coll it will be hard to remove, so use a rag to pick it up (since it will be very hot and then set it on a solid surface until it cools down.

Then clean it will your choice of solvent

Lots of good ideas. Many thanks, all, for your input!

I think I'll try the hair dryer followed by simple green. I find the notion of melting the stuff into a little puddle of goo appealing!

Re: sticky "cosmoline wrapping" on GK flash hider?

Done. Stripped the wrapping off, and cleaned it up.

Pix attached below.

There was actually very little crap left on the flash hider after I managed to pry the wrapping off. I hit it with a hair dryer and melted the goo to a liquid form and wiped it off with a paper towel. Then dunked it in a jar of simple green and let it soak a while. Then took it out and scrubbed it down with a toothbrush and rinsed it off.

Most serious issue is rust. More than I had hoped for. Also, as you can see in the pic, the rim is kind of dinged on one side and sort of sharp - it'll definitely snag something if I don't do something about it.

Any suggestions anyone has about dealing with the rust and refinishing it are welcome!

Bar Keepers Friend will remove the rust

It's a powder type clenser available at Wal-Mart
