Ranting about Avatar

Okay, this has been a long time on my mind, and the more I think of it, the more obvious it is.
Of course, anyone of us who has watched a few classic movies and Avatar notices that Avatar's plot is a straight copy of that of Dances with wolves or Pocahontas, but that's not the point, I reckon everyone has heared enough of it.

But as I was watching avatar, even the setting seemed plagiated from H.P. Lovecraft's Int he walls of Eryx. For those of us who have never readed it I'm going to do a little summary of it's satting and plot for you.

Humanity has traveled to Venus and discovered crystal orbs, which can be used as a source of electric energy, and doesn't pollute and so on. It jsut hapens that the venusian primitive lizardmen aren't too happy about humanity stealing their holy chrystals from them, and of course there is a fight over them.
Venus has a toxic atmospehere, and everyone travelling in Venus' toxic jungle needs a breathing apparatus and a protective suit to stay alive. Also the jungles have mind-affecting plants and a very thick underbrush.
The story describes the main character (An employee of a mining company) going on a chrystal collecting trip to the jungle. At first the main character is strictly thinking that the lizardmen should be eradicated and their cities burned to the ground, but then he gets trapped in an invisible maze supposedly created by the lizardmen. In hte maze is a skeleton of an other miner, who had found the hugest chrystal ever seen. the main character gets trapped in the maze and his watersupply is running short, and there's a huge flock of the "primitive" lizardmen outside of the maze seemingfully watching the main character suffer and being amused of it. The main character starts to realize that MAYBE htey aren't that primitive afterall, and understands the religious meaning of the alien chrystals, and in the end before dying scribbles in his diary that humanity should leave Venus for good and let the lizardmen be as they were.
But of course this doesn't happen and the mining company jsut gets a platoon of flamethrower corps to wipe the lizardmen out, and the story ends with the maze destroyed.

This Sh!t sounds a lot like Avatar.

Yeah, exept it came out 1936!

James Cameron, I am disappointed in you.

This is not intended as an insult towards anyone who liked Avatar, or anyone who likes Cameron's films, because, hell, I like them too. Avatar was a good or an ok film at least, but for a 16-year development, no cigar.

Okay, now I have this off my heart. I hope there's at least someone who also sees my point. Thanks for reading this far.

Ive said all along, Avatar was absolutley stunning to watch, I just thought the story was a letdown.

It annoyed me the same way Peter jackson's King Kong annoyed me. Jackson made skull island SOOOO interesteing that I want to just hang out there and look around, same with avatar. That planet was so well thought out much Like Herbert did for Dune. I'd love to hang out on pandora and look around.

You could argue It's a universal theme...

Human history is filled with some more powerful dudes invading some other dudes to get their natural resources. Other dudes fight back and (optionally) win.

Avatar was damn pretty film, but the story and setting annoyed me too much to enjoy it completely. A perfect plug-your-äbrains-off-and-enjoy film.

And wth, flying mountains with WATERFALLS? Where's the water coming out of?

Well, I also enjoyed Avatar and if they had tried to make that book into a movie in 1936, it would not have been nearly as good.
So, I'm glad someone waited to tell the story well.
:)

I actually would have liked it alot more if it would have gone with the book's plot.

I guess Avatar is in the same boat as Indepence Day was. Nice effects, but a made up boom...completely forgettable. The following years will show...as on ID
