R2-D2 Deluxe Electronic JAAKS Pacific Mod

Whaaat! The Bandai kit lied to me! I am disappoint ;)
Seriously, though, whichever version/variant you make, it's gonna be awesome!
As a companion piece, have you seen the upcoming electronic BB-8 figure in the same scale?

Sorry, I'll let you finish one project at a time :D

Ha ha...no prob...ordered the BB-8 like just after X-Mass, should be here in March :)
So many Projects and so little time :p Love it!

What a coincidence...just read this about Sideshows new Delux R2D2 over at Star Wars.Com

This figure even reproduces movie mistakes. As Artoo was a practical, hand-built prop, there were some oversights during filming. Sideshow has gone as far as to include these in the figure. “Due to inconsistency during filming, Artoo’s horseshoe-shaped shoulder panels are switched in different scenes,” explains Bischof. “We made these same panels removable so that they could be swapped between the two shoulders. I would imagine 98 percent of people wouldn’t notice or even care, but this feature is for those 2 percenters who might appreciate this subtle nod.

I guess we are included in those 2 Percent :)

Do you mean this one:

http://www.lacitedesnuages.be/bouti...1780&type=45&code_lg=lg_us&num=1#.Vsg9GOZ4nIU ?

If the info on that page is correct, this BB-8 is not the same scale (but it is the same size ;) ).
Thats the one and its not that pricey.
I keep buying stuff that one day might be a project and I sort a start working on one when I feel like it. At the mo I have

- Hasbro Tie Advanced
- Hasbro A-Wing
- Hasbro Tie Special Forces (The HUGE ONE)
- Hasbro Slave One

They are all sitting down in the basement waiting to be modded, but first I will Finnish the R2 and next up is a Studio Scale X-Wing,I am waiting for the new version from Nexus with Motorized Wings :)
As you can see my Tie needs the counterpart as I got the figures for them :D

Well, ain't I just laying out the cock-up's one at a time lately... ;)
No worries I guess one needs to really start digging deep to find these cool and sometimes weird anecdotes regarding "Screen accurate" Models and Props, but thats what makes it sort a fun also. For every new Project I always learn a lot and when you try to show off your "Star Wars" Knowledge to the guys at work they simply say "You fracking Nerd" :) wich is oh so true.

Hi Guys

Had a Major set back yesterday...and don't tell me I should have know better...cause I should have!

To make it short...I Fed Up Big Time! I had this so many times before and I don't know why the HE.. I didn't take care about this from the start. The problem is simple and Oh so common with Hasbro Mods or any "Toy" mods for that matter...The Paint lifted off! :facepalm after masking for HOURS AND HOURS!
IMG_2992.JPGIMG_2988.JPG
As all the details and what have you are in one pice you have to do some pretty extensive masking (just my feeling, this was more tedious the masking the Falcon)

Now down to the Fup...I dint use a Adhesion Promoter from the start. I have done this kind of builds like...well enough times to know that one uses a Adhesion Promoter to make any paint stick to that nasty oily "toy" plastic, but this time I skipped that for no reason...simply trotting along and getting on with it :p

Well, lesson learned, spend most of the morning wet sanding the worst away and dug out a Can of that Ol Adhesion Promoter and went at it again. This Fup set me back like 3 days or so ( I know patience is a vertue for Modelers) but this one hurt me bad :(.

I don't have Pics of the disaster as I simply didn't won't to save it for the after world but it was BAD...Anho, got the parts painted in pure satin white again and will start masking in the morning. Got me some AK Extreme Metal Aluminium and will start of with that 1st thing.

Cheers guys and forgive me for letting off some steam here :)

Another tip: I don't know what type of tape you're using, but I've had great luck using the 3M Blue painter's tape on this type of crummy plastic.

Good luck with your awesome build:)

Robert

one thing to bear in mind when deciding to which version to make, is that R2's legs swap sides between ANH and the rest of the films
Heh, I thought they used the same leg for both left and right, so the squares are either front or back depending on which side you're looking at.

:) I think it's more that they had one construction version for the Tunisia filmed scenes, and one for the studio filmed scenes, but the one legged theory could also work ;)

Hi Guys

Have been fighting with a lot of paint problems on this build.
I posted some of it in PHArchivist thread "Cursed Projects" You can read about it HERE.

The short version is I Fuped from the start when not using a Adhesion Promoter and I made some pretty weird decisions when ordering 3D Printed parts (Lessons Learned for next build)

IMG_3004.jpg
Look at the Surface next to the Horseshoe Shoulder, RIPPED PAINT!

IMG_3016.jpg
Got most of the parts painted in a´sorta "ok" level of finish, again I repainted and Sanded some of the parts like 2-3 times before getting to this stage due to the lack of a Adhesion Promoter.
Next problem was Metallic Paints (I hate Metallic Paint). I used the Formula that a lot of R2 Builders use for the Blue Panels applying two layers of paint, first layer is a Automotive Metallic Purple and the Second Layer a Automotive "Anodized" Blue (Really fluid and thin stuff) that loves to run in under the Masking Tape creating puddles and gooey edges resulting in disaster. I sanded, remasked and repainted some of the Blue Panels like 3 times before sorta getting close to a good finish.
IMG_3038.JPG
The 3D Printed Projectors painted with AK Xtreme Metal Aluminium Paint (I really can recommend this compared to Alclad II as it is really forgiving compared)
I used the AK Xtreme Metal Aluminium on all "Aluminium" parts. I also got some Glas Cabochon's (normally used for Jewelry and Broaches) as Lenses for the Holo Projectors, they do the job 100% but I needed to sand them down to the right diameter...was a bit of work but not to hard.

IMG_3041.JPG
Fitting the Cabochon (Lens) in the Holo Projector
IMG_3039.jpg
Holo Projector lit up using a 9V 8mm White LED
IMG_3044.JPG
Most of the LED's/Fiberoptics (still work in progress) I will use for the Logic Displays and the Holoprojectors.
That little square unit 2nd from the left is a remote controller relay that allows all LED's to be switched on and of using a small Remote...never did this before so I hope it works out.

IMG_3034.jpgIMG_3035.jpg
Most of the parts put together to get a over all feeling of the Model and here you also get a sense of the scale I guess.

IMG_3037.jpg
Got me a "Acrylic glass Cover 40cmx40cmx40cm" that will go on top of the R2 with its back lit base stand using a wooden Frame cladded with styrene painted black.

IMG_3036.jpgIMG_3043.jpg
A Transparent Acrylic glas plate painted (sorta frosted) White from the back as a base. The hole thing is backlit using a LED Chain I bought at the Hardware store...sort a does the job.

Still to do...

- Finish all the LED's and Electronics.
- Weathering (all kind of weird things can happen when doing this so wish me luck :p )
- Final assembly and wiring up batteries with the Remote Relay etc.

Well done, great presentation, one question, what diameter is the artoo head ? I may have a solution that could make it more realistic .

Cheers guys.

Have caught another Monster Flu here so I been been flat out in bed for the last 4 days and haven't been able to do anything other then watching episodes of Rick and Morty mixed with episodes of Futurama :p Thats the level of intelectual input my brain have been able to cope with.

I just draged myself out of bed to measure the Dome and its 186mm in Diameter. Looking forward to hear what you have in mind there.

hope your feeling better , I don't think this will help you , but might give you some ideas for a future build.
Ikea are selling brushed steel bowls
the diameter of them is
120mm
200mm
280mm

They are beautifully finished and I'm thinking that down the line id like to build an ardrino controlled head even would look cool. I'm trying to source the correct marking dye at the moment as these deserve it .

Ahhh! how cool is that, but you are right, the sizes are to different compared, although it would require some serious work to cut the steel even if the size would have been ok. I guess I would save that for a full size R2 one day :).

Anyway feeling a bit better so will try to get as much done over Easter as I can, started my Holiday Yesterday and have a week off so if nothing really weird happens I hope to at least get all things wired up and assembled ready for weathering towards the weekend...lets see how it goes.

Shortly after I purchased these lidl released a three pack of steel bowls for €11 , I didn't buy them but they may be closer to your diameter , good luck with assembly

Hi Guy's

So I Sorta finished my R2... I say Sorta cause I am not 100% happy with it due to all the paint and what have you problems I had during this build.
But I decided to simply finish it and move on to the next build as it was to far down the line :p

Well its not that bad or is it...well as I said I could have done some things much better and some things are ok but none the less it does look sorta cool in its display case and what have you.

IMG_3051.JPG
LED's for the Logic Disp, PSI and Holo Projector mounted

IMG_3060.JPG
All LED's and Optical fibers mounted in the dome.

IMG_3079.jpg
Weathering sorta done.

IMG_3084.jpg
Using pics from TFA as reference for the weathering using Oils Paint and Pastels.

IMG_3096.JPG
with the Display base and the acrylic cover it does look sorta cool with my other models.

IMG_3099.jpg
Lit up using the Remote control Unit hidden under the "frosted" Plexi plate"...not to bad :)

Here is a short vid showing the Front Logic Displays together with the Holo Projector and the PSI all lit up using a total of 14 LED's (and a Lot of Optical Fibers :) )
The Model is not fully weather here but sorta in progress.

Rear Logic Port using 12 LED's and again A LOT of Fibre Optics...I guess 150 or more strands, Rear Holo Projector and PSI lit up using one RGB LED and one White LED.

Late to the party. With a lot of these types of plastics they dont lend themselves to repainting. My method, wash in the sink or bath tub with Dawn or equivalent to cut any oil residue. Drip dry. Spray with adhesion promoter, let dry then primer. This is the hard part....let it sit for a few days to fully harden.

OP its looks great.
