Props for Beginners Thread

One of the things I am working on is a geiger counter. It's a wooden box painted yellow with a switch, a cord from an old phone charger, a metal pipe and a gauge. I'll post pictures when it's done but it is a pretty simple and inexpensive project.

You could make thors hammer out of foam, a dowel, some scrap leather and some paint all of which you can get from a craft store. Captain America shield. Hawkeye's quiver would be cool if you could get it to rotate. Thor's helmet. Some Bat gadgets like the batarang. Green Lanterns ring. Let me know if you want some more super hero ideas. ooooooo last minute thought, simple and should be cheap, nightwings sticks

As a bit of a novice im getting into the habbit of seeing what i can make from household objects. Watching Lost again and got up went to the kitchen put some brown sugar in a baggie and elastic banded it up, hey presto a Charlie heroin bag. took 1 minute and it always makes me smile when i see it. That kind of thing, Start simple and work your way up.

Made a Captain America star spangled man / rescue shield out of a large sheet of foam board. cut it to shape. few coats of spray paint and bam, a really cool 1:1 prop.

once you get your head in gear as to how to put things together you wont be able to turn it off :)

As a noob it's interesting to see what people are thinking of, and the different materials suggested. The reactors and sabers are a great idea. Going to have to decide on what I should attempt first.

Thanks for the ideas.

Batarangs!!!
Any version--even your own.
Once you build a few, you'll soon be adding springs and hinges.
Great first prop for anyone.
Use wood, plastic or even foam.
Use familiar patterns, or make custom designs.

My only project so far was to make the orange toy revolvers look more realistic for a costume. I like how it turned out. my next project is going to make a runed lexicon from skyrim out of a baseball cube, 1-2 blue leds, a watch battery, clay and some paint.

I scored a Dickel Powder Horn Bottle at a flea market for $2.00. The leather grip was in poor shape and it was missing the stopper. I was able to fabricate a new stopper and cannibalized a ladies belt (from the same flea market for $.50) to replace the deficient grip. A brief stop at Michael's for a piece of leather and I was ready to begin a "Prop on the cheap". The grip was the most difficult (and it wasn't very difficult), contact adhesive was used to affix a strip of leather over the raised lettering on the side of the bottle, a quick shot of red paint and presto, a Saurian Brandy bottle. It was an easy project and made a great present for one of my brothers.
