pristine vs weathered

Why would someone want a pristine version of an item (ex han blaster) when they were always weathered on screen?

Im just curious what the lure is , are they looking for a 'what it may have originally looked like/afbb' kinda thing, and why?

To me the weathering gives it character, pristine doesnt do it for me...

I make all my props weathered. I just like the way they look (as if they've been extensively used in their respective universes).

weathered is (or looks) used.

someone might want a NEW/never used (looking) prop.

ei: a JUST completed lightsaber
a JUST issued trooper blaster
" " Starfleet phaser

maybe their collection focuses on pristine items. All shown in a display case together. The "theme" is clean/unused.

There are many props I would want in pristine/unused looking condition

if its weathered on screen and you feel confident doing it then weather it. at the very least you may end up with a one of a kind paint job etc adding some character but if you spend alot of money on something like a mr blaster id be more wary my self with that but helmets and armour you can always redo.

I weather all my proton packs and traps.....i like the look a lot, it gives the item more of a personality, or characteristic, almost lettin the prop say "yeah look at me, i was in a battle...came out, VICTORIOUS, look at my scars." awesome.

This is a comparison of the preference of accuracy and the preference of cleanliness and nascence. Really not much to compare.

I prefer a weathered finish whenever accuracy comes into question, but would, otherwise, prefer a pristine finish for items that I'm not overly concerned with being accurate.

i think it depends on what you want you props to be seen as, ie if you want han solo's blaster that belonged to him, then for accuracy, it has to be weatherd the same as the film prop, but if you want the blaster because it is a star wars blaster and its the detail and design that gets you, then i dont think it matters.

I dont think im expaining myself very well, in a nut shell, if you want it to be screen used. Weathered.

If you want a prop, doesnt matter.

jsut my opinion

I like Pristine myself.

I have a Vader ROTJ and an OWK that I'm making and they will be pristine. At one time, all the weapons were pristine.. My ROTJ luke is pristine, my MR trooper blaster is pristine.

Plus out of 100 sabers, mine will look different and unique by being pristine.. :D

actually, i could see anything imperial as once being pristine, not really the rebel stuff though, since they were rebels ;), they didnt have the extra money for new stuff to buy...
and i dont think han ever owned anything 'new'

Imagine in a museum...they've cleaned the artifacts as best they can. If you're displaying a saber, maybe you want it purty.

Having said that, I'd weater many of my props. A lot of the prequel sabers are pretty shiny, and I don't have the heart/guts to weater an MR, but I'd never, say, polish the pins on a real Graflex, or make an unchipped Luke V2.

In my collection, I like to have a mix, which I think reflects the real sabers. I can't imagine a pristine OB ANH, but I can't imagine a grimy Mace saber either. Prequel Jedi maintained their gear.

One thing I don't get...why weather and OB ANH or Vader ROTJ based on Chronicles pics or MOM pics? The prop has picked up some major damage in its travels since then, so to make it look just like the display is likely overboard. The OB Chronicles has some pretty significant differences from the new high def. shots we're seeing from the screenshots.

I love weathered props...........no matter what........ The Star Wars Universe was a used bunch of thrown together, beat to pieces, junk.... That is how George envisioned it............"used and lived in".

I don't think less of those who like their props pristine...........but give me a weathered version any day of the week.

For licensed products I would want pristine... and then I can always weather later. Pretty difficult to undo bad weathering done by the licensee, imo.

Personally I like both weathered and pristine.

Some items I just have to have a weathered version of - like Obi's saber from ANH because even though we only got very brief looks at it in the flick I could still see it was weathered. However even then I've got an MR weathered and a pristine version made from Romans parts.

For other items there the props were clearly weathered like Hans blaster, or Vaders ROTJ saber where I never really got to see it for long enough in the films to clock the weathering (not until later analysis of course) then it bothers me far less. In fact the Vader ROTJ is a good example of where I personally find a screen accurate replica to be too ugly and not particularly of interest, whereas a slightly idealized pristine version suddenly becomes a must have in the collection.

certain items I like pristine..IE obi ANH although I am making a weathered version since it is screen accurate.

definitely a case by case basis...

For me it is also different for different props...

Preferred pristine:

* Most sabers
* Leia blaster
* All my Star Trek props
* Logan's Run DS gun
* Space: 1999 stun gun and comlock

Preferred weathered:

* Obi Wan Ep IV saber
* Han Solo blasters
* Stormtrooper and rebel blasters (wish I had the skills to do a great weathering job on them)
* Blade runner gun (moderate weathering)

I would have to agree on all points here.

I feel the most important thing is realism. As long as realism is sustained it is all good. In many cases it is good to have both (often one of each :D ). I personaly prefer weathered more often than not, but realize it can be a balance. I personally also weather my stuff because it can hide flaws. Though movie weathering can look pretty unrealistic up close. One of the coolist concepts I have ever seen though is the idea of the future artifact. A high tech item being dug up as an artifact of the past. I also like contrasts in juxtoposition.
