POTC Fans! Gibb's flask...!

Always sort of got a kick out of this prop.

A good friend and fellow member (who knows full well that I have TOO many projects on the plate), wondered if its sort of an obscure prop. ;) Matt Munson would likely call it a "Z list" prop. :lol But I liked it.

In POTC1 it provided (or assisted in) one of those many, charming, character defining moments for Jack Sparrow that we all know and love -- specifically when the flask is blasted through the hull of the cell on board the Pearl, Jack tries to take a swig to find that it is "bloody empty.", and returns it to a mystified Mr. Gibbs.

In POTC2, the prop actually serves as a MacGuffin, helping to ensnare curious Will Turner, and in doing so, forwarding the plot of the film.

I decided to make my own, cutting a piece of styrene to the proper shape per a screen cap, then using some parts glued on to form the basic shape, adding a sculpting medium, and shaping it out. The stopper is made of dowel, and I used a mahogony stain. I don't like it. Its too red. Should be more of a pine or oak color. I'll revisit that later.

For now, enjoy the pics, and let me know if you have questions.

Debated that. Consulted a fellow artist on that. Ulitimately determined that if that DOES exist, it doesn't show on screen.

Frankly, I don't think it exists... But I'm not an expert on how such things are constructed.

If it's leather (or supposed to be) it's stiched. Like a knife sheath.

Leather doesn't simply stick to itself.

I tend to agree. It appears to be made of some sort of stiff leather, and back in pirate times I imagine they would have just stitched it on - it'd be the easiest way.

Probably molded thick leather, either riveted, or stitched, and sealed with bees wax. :)

It's an existing item...a leather flask coated on the inside with a tar/pitch material to keep it watertight. There are numerous people who still make them, a quick google search revealed plenty of makers who's flasks look identical. I don't know this seller or his reputation, but his stuff looks good and it illustrates the flask design well...

BTW, your flask does look very nice indeed...I'd be proud to have it in my collection, I'm just offering some insight into the historical item they used in the film.

Thank you. I debated going with the more reddish leather as seen in that link, but opted to go the way I did...

I could drill small holes in the larger ones and thread some black thread in there...

Use artificial Sinew...should be available in rolls for a few bucks from most craft stores in the jewelry area. That's what would most likely have been used to sew the real thing.

Yeah, the same stuff they use in those Tandy leather bag kits.
