Phantasm Sentry Sphere / cutaway...thinkin' about it.

Well, I'm almost current on all of my prop jobs and that's gonna leave a window to get to my long neglected, follow-up run of Phantasm Spheres going. This will please a couple guys who have been on the reserve list for a looong time. But, that's for another thread.

This is probably something for myself, but I was thinking it might be cool to do a machined/all metal cutaway of a sphere; where the blade, bit, saw, exhaust port tube, that sort of thing would be visible.

The trick here is to make it 'other-worldly' without the trite wires and bashed electronics that some would be tempted to use.

I'm thinking a very clean, simply geared, all metal set-up with some sort of fluid core for faux power...similar to the yellow ooze we see the tall man and dwarfs spill.

Thoughts? Again, this isn't a sale or even reserve thread; just gabbin'

Here's a photo from the last run of solid spheres. Yep, solid metal. It's tricky machining a sphere and each one of these started out as a 4 pound chunk of metal.

Well,
Theyve established in the films that it contains the shrunken brains of the Tall Mans victim's . Not sure whats under the brain though , interesting question.....

I'm going with more of a P1 & P2 thought...

In the later films the spheres had eyes and all sorts of crazy **** going on.
I never cared for any of that; I enjoyed the simplicity of the early spheres.

The series rather fell apart for me after 2 anyway so in my 'theater of the mind' there's a little something more than dwarf brains in the sphere. That's so lame to me.

Would you be thinking something with a bio-mech feel? Maybe clockwork gears mixed in with fleshy type stuff. Or just straight gears and mech internals?

Sounds like a fun project! :)
-B89! :D

I guess it would be up to your imagination but an organic/ biomechanical inside was the first thing I thought of too.
Clockwork gears moving the arm would be cool. Maybe clear tubes with the yellow goo (like veins) running through it.
This sounds cool. I always wanted one of your balls. :lol

Ah, cool...
I still like em but they are clearly a diff vibe .

Damn Rylo, I need to get one of your spheres !! I have a Dwarf head from Phantasm 2 who needs a pet ...lol

You need to do a pull of that ugly little ****er and offer 'em up!

I would think it would be cool if the insides look like the inside of a human body. just my 2 Cents. and when / If you do other run, maker me down for one!!

I wasn't a fan of the OMG ITS A BRAIN reveal in the movies, but I think a custom design would look pretty sweet. It's a very basic overall design anyway (it's a sphere, can't get more simple that that), so I think the insides should reflect a sort of simple yet "steampunk" look to it. Before the brain reveal I always thought the Tall Man controlled them with his mind. (THEY RAN ON THE SOULS OF THE DAMNED!!! or some other crap. I was a youngun when the movie came out :lol )

Digging the idea of the fluid containers also.

I think it will end up looking pretty terrific. Maybe take a sample from Howards work and pop in some bent brass tubing or a small glowing light for the fluid tank.

Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Getting ready to offer a run of those w/options soon!

It's been a long time since the last run. Trying to work up the turnaround time, now.

I would be happy with a solid sphere version. :D

Awesome!

How about a tuning fork sort of device for the inside? I remember in the first film, the dimensional portal was kind of like a big tuning fork.

In one of the movies a sphere wobbled around (I think it was #3), so maybe a gyroscope-sort of thing.

You could go mechanical and do something like the little critters from Screamers.

With all the weird variations from the movies, you could almost do anything - body parts, ooze, Silly Putty, machine parts, a mouse on a wheel.... For some things like this, I'd rather not have a defined answer. It doesn't make or break the movie. It's an evil flying sphere that kills people. It's not Mythbusters. ;) I don't care how it actually functions.

I'm picturing a core that looks like those old floating marine mines, the ones with spikes all over the outside. This would be held in place by several pylons with maybe some sort of filament connecting to the blades to activate them.
And maybe surround that with some sort of fleshy membrane/lattice work?

Just keep it very simple, make it create just as many questions as it does answers.
