Personal Lightsaber Build

Hey everyone,

Giving you a look at my first prop build. I'm building myself a lightsaber, but im trying to go down the same paths the original star wars propmakers went down. This means using camera parts and other found objects as much as possible. I'm not worried about being accurate to anything, as this isn't a prop from the films, but my own beast.

My progress so far:

Parts shown here (left to right): Found D-Ring, Graflex slave unit, Brass threaded rod and an Argus flash handle.

The Graflex part was essential to me as it is so uniquely "lightsaber-y". The treaded rod is a basic plumbing part and gives a good weight to the saber. The Argus was a bargain find, but it has huge amounts of weathering and character.

Next steps are to find a "choke" section and an activation box. I'm also thinking about filling the whole prop with hypothetical parts (crystals, wiring etc).

Cheers for looking!

I've been thinking about building my own saber one of these days as well. Can't wait to see the finished product!

Mmhm, I'm very interested as well, this is very cool. I really appreciate that you're trying to go down a similar path as the builders back then. Does the slave have a solid bottom? will you drill through? that's a big threaded rod :D

i love this type of build - seeing your own take on a particular item while staying faithful to the 'feel' of the original... :thumbsup

I keep thinking that at some point you could add a clear tube with the LED lights. Like they have on the FX Lightsaber's.

neato. If the inside of all that is hollow, you might be able to actually get it to light up and make sounds.
There are other various lightsaber building forums that can help in this regard if that's the route you want to go

im tossing up wether or not to do this. im not particularly interested in having electronic components or anything at the moment, but perhaps in the future. the argus handle is conveniently hollow.

the slave is mainly solid, but it has a threaded inset in the centre that i can pop some threaded rod into for securing extra bits.
