Penny Dreadful

So, finale thoughts? I gotta say, Victor's "actions" seemed unnecessary. Nature was rapidly heading that way anyway. This just seemed like an action done just so it can be discovered next season and lead to a conflict between him and Ethan.

So, the vampire in the theater was not The Master. I'm thinking with all the clues we've seen dropped, the Master is going to end up more along the lines of the Mummy rather than Dracula. Maybe Amun-Ra. He's found his bride in Vanessa as Amunet. Although, didn't Vanessa respond to the medium saying she was not Amunet, but MUCH older?

Chandler going all wolfen was a long time coming. And, of course, the biggie was Sir Malcolm unloading his new Mauser into you-know-who.

All in all, a great season and a great start. Not sure how long this can last, but I'll be watching season 2 for sure.

Well, it seems like they knew they would get a season2 and wanted to save some stuff. Which lead to a really unsatisfying ending to season1. The last three episodes were not nearly as good as the first five and it´s a shame since I believe in ending on a high.

It is a good show, but far from great. 10 years from now I wont even remember it, that says it all for me.

I have to agree...to a point. I'll probably remember it 10 years from now, but my thoughts will likely be something along the lines of, "What was the name of that show with Timothy Dalton and Eva Green?" :lol I enjoyed the first season and will probably watch at least part of the second season, but I can't see it becoming part of my DVD/Blu-Ray collection unless I'm "wowed" by season two.

Mina's death was an actual surprise to me at the start, but then I had to remind myself, "They're borrowing from the fiction of the time, not making a direct adaptation of it."

Chandler going wolfen threw me off a bit. I mean, they didn't even give any hints to his condition prior to. It's like, "Oh yeah, he's a werewolf too, BTW. Sorry we didn't mention it before." But, it makes me wonder if the mother and child that got killed in the first episode was Chandler's doing or if it was a vampire (like it was suggested).

When it came to the Irish chick who was dying, I was suspecting that she would either end up a vampire or the Bride of the Monster (seriously, it was going to go one of those two ways since the start of the story. I was hoping more for her to be a vampire than the Bride of the Monster). Kinda wonder what's going to happen with her next season.

I wonder who else is going to turn up in this series from literature at that time.

They hinted so hard at it that I wasn't surprised at all when he wolfed out. There were several comments he made, plus the wolves in the zoo or whatever place it was thing had me convinced. I had thought it was possible before that scene but when I saw that one I knew that's his story.

There were many little clues dropped along that way the pointed to his being a werewolf. The murder at the beginning of the series was probably his doing. He would awake in a daze, isolated after a night of prowling. When he returned to the site of that first murder, he looked very guilty and the one woman there seemed to recognize him. He had a powerful influence over the wolves in the zoo. He refused to have his blood drawn and used, not wanting to infect anyone else with lycanthropy.

I'll admit, the waking up in a daze bit seemed like he was an alcoholic and went on a bing (seeing we've seen him get drunk with Mr. Gray, it only made me think that first wakeup was even more from a drunken stopper). And as for the wolves thing, I thought it was something he picked up as a skill (much like his gunslinging. I don't know if he's from the southern states of America or not, but his voice sounds like he has a bit of a southern twang to it ever once in a while. I know that in the southern states, even now, there are those who are into hunting, and his instructions to Ms. Ives seems like the kind of knowledge a person well verse in animal hunting would know, especially when you're out in the woods hunting along with other predators you'd most likely run into like wolves and bears).

Ethan was the killer in the opening scene, he also killed the light lamp guy and lady with the apple in the park. They hinted him being a wolf man from the points others have said. Waking up a daze, no blood being drawn, wolves at the zoo and letting them smell him as he is one. The bite mark & blood on his hand they showed when he woke up on the beach / bar dock. Plus the fool is very fast gun or no gun.

Killing his hooker girlfriend to make her the bride was dumb. Like he isn't gonna find out and go nuts on franky & friends. I think they could have used her better.

Loved grey getting turned down by Vanessa. Poor sap was starting to cry. Friend zoned! Ha

The show better get back on track from what it started out as. Which seemed to be a good show to the half way point. I said I'll give it two full seasons just cause I like monsters and the cast.

Once they mentioned she was dying from tuberculosis I had a feeling she would either end up as a vampire or as the Creature's bride. Considering Frankenstein's two (that we know of) previous creations retained latent memories from their previous lives, it should be interesting to see how Brona reacts to the Creature and to Chandler once she's reanimated; that alone could create tension between the Creature and Chandler. And then...

Ethan...Killing his hooker girlfriend to make her the bride was dumb. Like he isn't gonna find out and go nuts on franky & friends...
I'm pretty sure that's the exact reason they did it--it creates animosity between Chandler and Frankenstein. And then there's the Creature...one way or another, I'm sure we're going to see their version of Frankenstein (both the Creature and the Doctor) meets the Wolf Man.

Just stumbled across this on Showtime last night. It was already on episode 3. Watched 3 and 4 and DVRed thru 8. I must say I'm liking it so far, really wish I had caught it from the beginning. How long is the series?

And even though it got renewed, I'm out, I was totally unimpressed with where the show went last year and being a Showtime series, it's stuffed full of wholly gratuitous sex and violence that have nothing to do with the plot, it's just there to get horny teenagers to watch.

Pass.

I just finished the first season, and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this. Someone was asking me what it was about and all I could really think of to say was I thought it was kind of like a modern Dark Shadows, but not like that Depp crap.

I was explaining it to my friend and I described as 'the concept of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen but with horror characters'.
He borrowed my bluray and loved it!
