Paramount Agrees To Merge With Skydance

A Sony/WB merger would clear the way for the long-awaited crossover between Jumani & Mortal Kombat. I'm in.

Nah, this is Sony we're talking about. What we'd get is a movie with characters from both rogue galleries but we won't see either Spidey or Bats. We'd get something like Venom vs. The Joker.
Close. They'd want universes as that is all they care about. They'd pump their non-spidey spidey-verse, create bat-verse, a separate JLA verse, and whatever other one's they could come up with - announce it all ahead of time, then release a bomb of a movie you'd never see another film in the 'verse' again.

The major studios are Sony, WB, Disney, universal, and paramount. That would reduce the list to 4. When does that number get small enough that governments stuff in an say no? I'd heard Sony was sniffing around Paramount as well.

They already let Disney buy so much stuff. They don't care.

What in the world is a Skydance? :D Reverse merger?

Sounds like a minnow trying to swallow a whale.

I know you’re being flippant, but as a trek nerd, this was probably best case scenario short of it being broken up and the Trek IP being sold individually. Head of Skydance has access to Oracle money and is a big trek nerd himself, and his sister has a famous game studio. Hopefully we can get some quality shows and games out of the deal. I don’t lay the downsides of the Abramsverse at the feet of Ellison.

Skydance Targets $2 Billion-Plus in Cuts After Paramount Merger

from the article:
He envisioned a new company that combined Skydance’s animation business with that of Nickelodeon, and CBS Sports with Skydance’s sports documentary division.

In hindsight, it seems that Skydance expanding into various other ventures, (animation, sports, I'm sure there are others) was to make sure they had leadership teams for the various Paramount departments already in place, so everyone can just be slotted in with minimal delay.

I guess that puts John Lassiter in charge of Nickelodeon Animation

$2 billion in cuts…I hope this doesn’t mean that they plan on selling off the actual Paramount Studio Lot…

You mean Lassiter is in charge of Sponge Bob now?! Didn't know they had any other animation left.

That figure doesn't sound high enough to ditch the whole complex. The $2b will probably be spread around a bunch of divisions.

But in the longer timeframe with AI advancement, I suspect all the LA backlots are doomed. All that Studio City real estate is stupid-valuable today.
I hope the city/state govt intervenes to preserve some stuff if the changes come swiftly. They could take a few dozen acres of studio city land and put up a 'Backlot Park' or something with the building facades. It seems like a legit thing to memorialize considering the town's history. And it would have tourist appeal.

Another option would be to take a bigger piece of land farther out from the city and put up a lot more of the old sets. 30 miles away from LA the land is flat worthless desert.
