Painting wood to look like concrete

Looking for tips on how to paint wood to resemble concrete. Need to create a portable display with about a 2' x 4' slab of concrete. It won't incur foot traffic, but will get some wear and tear, so something like foam isn't going to hold up. Wood just came to mind, so if there is a better material that isn't overly expensive, I'm game.

Cover the wood with Spackling ( joint compound ). Then paint. Should work great.

Hmm.. Spackle may work. Do you think a vinyl spackle would crumble with any abuse? I'll get some and experiment. Thanks!

Spackle will work great. just sand the wood before you apply it. and remember to make it kinda rough. to smooth and it wont look real.
