Oz The Great and Powerful (Post-release)

I loved Defranco as Oz. Nailed it. The wizard was a con man and a crowd barking dramatic showboater... That's about how I would picture him to have been in his 20's 30's.

I love Mila... would probably drink the girls bathwater... but agree she was horrible for the role. Maybe if they switched the 2 sisters... But to me the whole movie was solid as a rock untill she turned... just took me out of it a bit. But it ended well and was very magical with the throne room and all tying into and leading up to the original.

I give it a 4 out of 5. Yes, a lot of that is because it was not unlike a disney ride with the visuals etc. But I truly enjoyed myself.

I agree with OldKen, Kunis was fine until the transformation. Of course she had big shoes to fill, we all grew up with the Wicked Witch from the Wizard of Oz and she missed the mark. I think the makeup, outfit, and even some of the body language was wrong.

Still it was a fun movie and my 17 yr old son and I enjoyed it.

It was, in my opinion, just "OK."

Honestly, the most stand out character in the whole film was entirely CG (The doll, I cannot recall her name).

That, and the the revelation that the Wicked Witch of the West looks bangin' in tight leather pants. lol

I don't hate it, but it was completely forgettable. Very let down as I had been looking forward to this film.

The wife and I saw it, and we liked it. We went home talked about it, and then got into a debate over who was hotter: Kunis or Weisz.

You did an excellent job on your costumes by the way; I couldn't resist not creeping through your album! Very nice!

Thanks a bunch, Jodo! I think your Jack Sparrow and Mad Hatter especcially are killer!!

Was I the only one that giggled at Theodora's transformation? It was a little... theatrical... which may have been what she was going for. I found it a little hard to go from sweet and naive to pure vengeful evil. Then again the original had a bit of a cheese factor. At least they only had one musical number :lol

It took me half the movie to realize that Theodora was the chick who plays Meg on family guy.

Her screeching was great, but every time she spoke normally I couldn't help but think "Shut up, Meg."

The china girl annoyed me at first but quickly redeemed herself to me as one of the very few functional ladies in the film. Does Oz not have any hot guys at all or something? (Not that Oz was that hot, but he was lacking in twirly mustache- BULLAY!!)

For what small things annoyed me about the film, I greatly enjoyed it overall. It was a fun ride. The 3D was hokey at times, I feel like the only moment I'll really miss it will be the intro credit animation- that was the only really clever use of 3D in my opinion. Everything else had a WOOOOaaaaaaooooOOOOAH it's THREEEEEeeeeeDEeeeee!! vibe to it that makes me roll my eyes but kids probably eat up.

The flying monkey became my favorite character. No particular reason why. He was just adorable >o>

Weisz Was the hottest of the witches. It's true, so True. Kunis wins the cuteness award tho before she changed.

I liked the movie a lot, but did not like Meg's character at all. She annoyed me, and too much over-acting on the wicked witch.

Thanks! :D

And yes, I agree that's what they were supposed to be going for, very old school theater-esq.!

Fiance and I just got back. Every time Mila Kunis breathed in her black outfit all I could think was "Wicked Witch of the Chest." We both thought this movie was not what it could have been and left pretty disappointed.

Just picked up the blu-ray and watched this. Not too bad, not too great, but I did enjoy it. Once he got to Oz it seemed to drag a little, I thought, but the end battle was great! I really enjoyed finding out about Theodora's story. Classic witches have always fascinated me and the the Witch from the original movie, along with Witchiepoo from HR Puffnstuff have frightened me since childhood (ten points to anyone who can name the one time both of these witches were together on the screen at the same time).

China Doll did steal the show but I found some of the interaction between her and the real characters seemed pretty fake. It was just too obvious that the actors were just pantomiming and just holding air while she was added in post. I had no problem with Mila as Theodora (I never knew that was her name) but the make up seemed to make her head look a little too big. I really liked the way the end battle was played out, taking advantage of the wizard's fraudulence. Good nods to the original, but some of the dialogue seemed a tad too modern to me. But that is probably due to the fact that the overacting of the 30's movie is forever etched in my head and without it something just makes it seem "off".

But overall I give it 3 out of 5 stars. Glad I just waited on the blu-ray, tho.

I saw this mentioned in a professional review in the papers. Someone noted that James Franco did the worst acting with a CGI character he'd ever seen. He moved like nothing was in his hands.

Despite James Franco's inability to act with a CGI character, I found the movie itself to be quite good.

Rachel Weisz was easy to spot as the wicked witch (but still beautiful nonetheless). Mila Kunis did a good job as Theodora, and I saw the reason why she became the other Wicked Witch right off the bat when Oz pulled the whole seduction stunt with her when they met (I believe my thought was "Well, this won't end well...."). Michelle Williams as Glinda was... well, there's no other way to put it, really... she was luminous.

The only downside I found was with the appearance of Theodora post transformation, but that mainly because of Warner Bros retaining rights to the likenesses seen in the 1939 film. Because of this, Disney had to change things enough to satisfy the legal department, including using a "sufficiently different" shade of green for the skin called theostein, omitting the signature chin mole, and going with the overly arched eyebrows. Couple that with the fact that Mila Kunis' face is a much different shape than Margaret Hamilton's (the original Wicked Witch), and you can see why it only barely worked.

Still my favorite movie of 2013. Yes, it had flaws - (the biggest being the green witch's make-up) - but overall an amazingly fun ride.

It sucks a bad movie like Man of Steel rakes in money like it does and Oz barely got noticed.

I loved OZ the Great and Powerful. I thought it was a wonderful kids film. I went to see it three times in the theater. I liked Franco as Oz, despite some people finding him lackluster. I thought that he had a certain innocent/cheesiness that was just right for the role -- an amateur, wanna-be wizard. It was probably my favorite film of 2013 (or was that 2012?) as well. Hmmmm, let's see what prop do I want. A GOOD china girl that doesnt cost what the limited edition Disney does!

I found that I enjoyed this a whole lot more the second time around. Despite it's flaws I think it is a pretty good movie.

I saw this in the theaters a while back and thought it was serviceable. Nothing amazing, but decent.

I saw it in 3D, though, and felt that the 3D effect actually worked pretty well. That surprised me. It had some of the "comin' at ya!" style 3D, but the more subtle depth-of-field stuff worked pretty well, too.

I'll also say that I LOVED the title sequence. One of the best I've seen since, probably, Casino Royale.

James Franco's performance was about what I expected. I think he's a good actor, but I think he wasn't quite right for the role. And the CGI for stuff like China Doll and the monkey butler dude was...eh. But I'm kind of used to that these days, since I find a lot of CGI to be underwhelming. I think it has less to do with Franco's performance and more to do with how they animated the character.
