In the mid 80s I was koo-koo about wrestling (I was 15 years old in 1985). I wanted to "be" a wrestler back then. I had my favourites such as Hogan, Macho Man, Piper etc...
However top of the list was The Dynamite Kid. Along with Davey Boy Smith, they were the tag team The British Bulldogs:
Dynamite is on the right--- the shorter of the two. In fact The Dynamite Kid was one of the shortest wrestlers back then at about 5'7". I was a short kid, so that's probably why I gravitated toward him (along with his explosive, high-flying wrestling style).
This year I fulfilled a childhood dream of recreating his signature red ring attire-
So I had to replicate his "Bulldogs" lettering, his Union Jack and Bulldog silhouette, and the distinctive red-white-blue wrestling boots.
And my finished version:
I also replicated their early ring entrance jacket-
And to top things off, at a local con last weekend I got to meet their rivals "The Dream Team": Greg "The Hammer" Valentine and Brutus Beefcake. They were the heel tag team the Bulldogs beat for the Tag Team Championship at Wrestlemania 2 in 1986! Needless to say it was a thrill to meet them!
We talked about their matches against the Bulldogs--- they remembered matches and particular moves they did 30 years ago like it was yesterday! A great day!
