It apparently happened on Saturday (Japan time). Nintendo hasn't made a formal public announcement, but a release has been put out in both Japanese and English on the business side.

RIP. A controversial President but definitely had a big impact on the industry as we know it.

It's a sad day. It will be interesting to see what a change in leadership does for Nintendo.

Nintendo is losing alot of their former presidents. It's a sad day for the game industry and sadly a lot of newer gamers won't know of his impact on the industry. Nintendo has put out a press release PDF out on their website about it. http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2015/150713e.pdf

    R.I.P Satoru Iwata

Satoru Iwata passed away at the age of 55. He was the president and CEO of Nintendo. He was one hell of a game programmer too.

All of the Nintendo fans had developed a close relationship with him as he was doing most of the Nintendo direct :(

I'll miss him, he was an emblematic figure of this company.... R.I.P
