newbie help

Hello all! I've just started an older version of one of Mike's X Wings. I have never done one before so I'm really a beginner here. All the great builds from all of you guys is really inspiring and intimidating, to say the least, but what better place to ask for advice than here! Its also why I've been inspired to do one for myself. I'm trying to do a Red 2 and, at this point, seem to just be stuck as to where to go next. I've really only just started it and Ive read a lot of threads about all the others out there but sometimes I just lose the forest thru the trees when I research something too much. I know the weathering phase is truly what makes one of these beauties really look like they should and I want to get it looking as best as I can. It won't be anywhere near perfect, I know, but it such a great kit, I want to at least try to do it some justice. Any advice out there for where I should go from here? Any help would be greatly appreciated!:thumbsup

Weahering can be done a multitude of ways. You can get good sooting/blast marks with the airbrush....a double action would be the one to use, don't forget dark washes(blacks, greys whatever, typically a 10:1 ratio or paint to thinner, but you can adjust it to your liking) to bring out details and that can be done with just about any paint medium, but be mindful with what you started with. You can get some ugly reactions if using differnt paint media on the others.Pastels make for great weathering as well as using the old paint brush for "paint chips" and there are all kinds of techniques for that.I got allot of ideas from Fine Scale Modeler. They don't feature many Sci-Fi projects, and its mostly dominated by WWII and race car subjects, but the weathering is universal.I'd e-mail them as well (Tips&techniques)for wethering tips and ideas and look for other such things as well on starshipmodeler.com.

Forgot about Finescale. Haven't been there in a while but refreshed my memory. Just went over there and perused the threads and found some great advice on weathering over there. Thanks for the reminder!

I'd check starship modeler first. Many times when e-mailing Fine Scale, you have to wait days for a response due to the high volume of e-mails they receive.

Thanks again for the advice, guys! Guy, I've watched your build threads on your X Wings and they are fantastic, to say the least! I'm really just a beginner here and your recent threads are quite inspiring!
