New Superman Costume

Whew! I'm so torn about this pic. I hate the suit... the textured BS... its only there to make it hard to recreate IMHO. The Cape I really like - long and flowing good. The Shield - I was always a fan of the larger shiled on the chest but the raised shield - lame. The look of the actor, I'll reserver judgement - but in this pic he looks angry - almost like a villian, but he does seem to have the Physique... I know this is the costume forum "But" wht will make it is if this one has a really good story. I can forgive costume quibbles if the story is worthwhile :)

...but in this pic he looks angry - almost like a villian...

I just interpreted the pic as him just having been thrown into that safe door by Zod (note how it looks caved in from the impact) and was about to break out some serious whoop-ass.

I think it is way too early to make a final decision. But I like the look, I like the darker colours, do not like the textured fabrice, (makes it harder for people to replicate). The kiss curl, needs to be there. Maybe the action pose just isn't showing it or something. I don't remeber reeves having it in every scene I am sure there were times in battle were it must have got messed up in his hair.
But one thing that bothers me, and I don't think anyone has mentioned it, look at his thigh, there seems to be a raised pattern on it, it is not the cape hanging over as you can see the line at which the cape goes.

I think adding texture is another way of the studio inhibiting replication of the suit. The more complicated they make it, the fewer fan copies they'll see at comic-con...

I agree and I think they're all just being jerks. It makes no sense or reason why a studio would want to limit the amount of costumes re-produced. Firstly, it's not like they sell their own replicas so they aren't losing profit on fan made ones. And secondly, costumers are showing their support and immense appreciation for something and are basically free advertising while doing so.

I'd say seeing 1000 supermans at SDCC would be a lot more impressive and make the studio/film look a lot better than seeing none. *shrug*

The thing with Cavill is that, to me, he looks a lot like Ioan Gruffudd, so I keep seeing Reed Richards in a Superman suit..

Ah... wait! NO.... ugh. Cannot unsee. DARNIT!

First of all let me say this, I think you are partly right. It is a way of making costumes harder to replicate. However, there are other reasons that I believe they take into consideration. The first one is a big one. New camera technologies. I'm a costume designer, but I work in theatre not film. I've recently been in talks with the film costume design program at UCLA because I'm thinking of attending and this topic came up my conversations with the teachers there. The new camera technologies like HD and such are making Costume Designer's jobs harder. The way the cameras see light, shape, color, etc is different from the older style cameras. Certain textures and colors are distorted or do wild things on screen. I know stripes have to be chosen very, very carefully because they can make audiences dizzy...or un together on screen and look different entirely. Also, because our films are so much clearer and detailed, solid color costumes are big boring blocks of color! Trust me...if they didn't add in some texture to a traditional comic book character costume...It would look horrible! Texture is one of the most key design elements for costume designers. It makes wonderful eye candy for audiences. A few other things are the face that designers like to do new things than what has been done in the past. Solid fabrics have been done in superhero movies...so now everyone is on the texture bandwagon.

Now with that being said, I don't like this costume so far. It's over textured and way dark. But hopefully that clears up some questions about why Hollywood is doing what they are doing. :)

He could be dressed as Chewbacca and I wouldn't care so long as they got the character right, which in my opinion hasn't really been done yet. But then I'm partial to the S:TAS and JL/JLU versions of Superman.

Eh, i kinda dig it. Not a fan of how the cape comes out of the neck though, looks like there's 2 holes that it threads through.

Still, it looks pretty cool. Big S shield, huge cape, colors that don't seem "grimdark gritty". Looks like he is getting up after being chucked into a safe, so that already shows there is going to be more action in this movie than "superman lifts heavy thing, gets beaten up, lifts heavier thing".

Personally, looking forward to the movie. Hell, with Snyder as the director, at least we might get to see Supes actually punch someone, and the slo mo will make sense :)

Did they do away with the signature curl in his hair?

I think this is an early promo photo. I've seen some street clothes photos of Cavill with the curl as well as an interview with the actor talking about the hair, so I know it's going to be there eventually.

I'm going to hold my judgement till I see more pictures. I really loved the Returns suit...So it's going to be hard to beat. He does not look very Superman-like to me either...So we'll see...

I'm withholding judgement as well. I don't like the texture, but I do like the cape and the larger shield. The actor also has a more Supes-like build than any of the previous actors.

On the other hand, I hated the returns suit. Thought it looked a little too "Gay Bar Superman". The vinyl cape, Nike boots, and bikini briefs killed me. I did like Routh as Supes though. Be hard to beat that one.

I love it all and can't wait.

Superman fan since I was a kid.
These changes don't bother me one bit.

Way better than Returns. That was awful.

it's about time we get a badass looking Superman and not some smiling goody goody.

We forget how badass superman can be sometimes...

As others have said, I was never a fan of the 'smaller-is-better' shield of the Brandon Routh costume, even though that harked back to the original Action Comics 1938 one. I also have always preferred this 'Earth 2' type slanted "S" to the more standard Chris Reeve version.

The cape, I like immensly, it harks back to the flowing capes of 1970's Batman, and used right could be an excellent composition tool for flying and action scenes - as long as they don't CGI it badly ( some of the CGI flying scenes in Superman Returns are cringeworthy in the extreme - how much will it cost until they realise they can't do it!!!

The look of the actor is very good too, I suspect he won't be a white bread truth-justice-american-way type of supes.

Bur try as I might, I can't imagine the costume working without the red trunks. That's like Batman without the utility belt or Wolverine without muttonchops or The Thing in trousers, cut it out guys! Is this just me?

To me, the reason for the lack of 'S' curl is in the picture - he's just been THROWN back into that safe door, obviously very hard, maybe the force blew his hair back? It looks like that, the way it's all styled.

It's better than GL's costume!

I wish this photo was from the end of The Dark Knight Rises - that would be SO cool if Supes turned up in that!!!!

I like it... Kinda. It's too rubbery looking, and the shield is the old Earth 2 Kal-L old man shield. I wish they wouldn't have changed the shield...

Actually, no, the shield is not from Earth 2. The Earth 2 Superman shield has a very particular look to it.

I defend their choice of using Henry Cavill to play Superman, since Cavill has an older look than Routh did in "Superman Returns." Superman, in Action Comics continuity, is 32 years old, but I'm sure everyone on here already knew that. :rolleyes

I also defend the texturization of the suit. Contrary to what you may believe, comic books from the 1930's, which were made to appeal to youngsters and had a color limit due to printing restrictions, do not always translate well when making them into a motion picture that takes place in today's world. Adding texture to the suit adds depth and another dimension. It shows that there's more to the suit than just fabric. It is a detail that creates a sense of realism and lifts it from the pages of comic books into our world.

I kind of like the proportions of it, but the texturing is a bit much. I would have liked it to be more like the Returns suit with a bigger shield. That tiny little shield just isn't impressive to me. Not too super.

Not too excited about this film in general. I look forward to seeing it as it's Superman after all, but I don't have any high expectations. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised come 2013.

Remember that SR came out in 2006. Routh has aged and also filled out a fair bit since then. I think he looks a lot more Superman these days than he did back then. Actually checking his IMDB, guess how old Routh will be this October?

Looking up Cavill I see he's 28, a couple of weeks younger than me. It feels weird to be older than the guy playing Superman.

Being that the movie takes place in the real world is exactly why I think the texture of the suit doesn't work for Superman. It should be fabric and not this rubbery get-up. The raised \S/ too. He's meant to have this gear on under his civilian wear after all, how does he hide that he's wearing a inch thick wet-suit with an embossed logo on the chest.

I think they do it for the sake of it now that they know it will show up in HD, and have the viewer in awe of the fine detail they can see in the picture. Looking at the clarity of the Reeve movies on the recent blu-rays release, there's a load of texure visible. The suit look great, practical and very real. I'd love to know where he hides the cape though.:)

The over-all feel of the suit is good. When you break down the details it seems a little much but at first glance the impression is power. I really like the feel but would have liked the cape to be a little more messy at the pleats and a little less 300.

Any idea about the fabric pattern from the pic. Looks like hex at some points others like it has multiple layers such as the spidey suit.
