Need help with Ronan The Accuser's Hammer

Hey all, I've started working on Ronan the Accuser's hammer from "Guardians of the Galaxy" and I need some help.



I've started by making the head of the hammer with EVA foam. And then started smoothing the sides with spackle.


But it seems to be weak and parts of it will fall off while I'm sanding that I don't want to fall off. Any suggestions on what I should do and are there any other things I could use other than spackle?

You might consider using Bondo instead - it's an automotive filler, sandable and fairly strong. It'll add a bit of weight to the head but that's not the worst thing.

Foam is too weak for anything but flexible costume parts, I would build something like this from Styrene sheet.

You can try a dense polyester foam covered with bondo or make the head out of LDF or MDF. That foam is flexing under the sanding causing the issues. It will probably do the same if you put bondo on it as bondo isn't very flexible once cured.
