First off Im new to the Forum and wow there is a lot of great info on this site. But secondly As the title states i need some help with my latest project, i just bought a 81 Delorean the engine in the poor thing caught fire and it cooked the engine compartment and the engine deck lid cover the rest of the car is very nice. Long story short i saved it from the being parted out and thought it would be a perfect platform for a time machine replica. My biggest problem is the two rear reactor vents, I have no idea how to get started fabricating them. I am hoping somebody out there my have the dimensions for them or a pattern to make them, Also does anybody know if they mount to the stock delorean engine cover or should a new engine cover be made as well, if so i could use dimensions or a pattern for that too. I Have searched high and low for detailed instructions on-line on how to build these parts and can't really find anything, any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi,
Sorry to hear about your DeLo catching fire. I'm doing a little project with my DeLorean at the moment to make the rear deck. I know what you mean about no info out there...
There was a crown in england that made a special tray that you could slid into the back and not need to modify the car. They no longer do them and the guy pointed me at Bobs Prop Shop. You only get a full car from him though so no joy there.
I printed out dozens of photos of the cars and by using mark points on the car was able to work out dimensions of most of the rear deck vents. The great thing is the tail lights are a grid so you can work that out very easily and then once you have a few measurements you can work out the others to a pretty accurate point.
I'll post some pics of my progress so far. If you like what you see I can try to draw something up for you with measurements. They may not be 100% accurate to the movie car but to me they look pretty darn close. I am using 3mm corflute to make the templates for the proper vents.

My version will be made so i can slide the tray in for displays etc. I don't want to drill/cut my car as its very tidy and low mileage. Regardless of this the vents are the same for a full conversion.

Also to answer your question on the engine cover, the time machine versions had the engine cover removed and a new tray made that hinges the same as the engine cover did but had the vents fitted to it. Cut outs are used to let the engine breath too. There are some good videos on Youtube if you hunt around.

Pics coming next...
