Need advice...

I'm about to sculpt something (Jayne's medal from Serenity for those that are curious) and I'm not quite sure what to do. The actual prop looks like crap. It looks like something that someone sculpted in about five minutes time. It's asymmetrical and poorly sculpted. I'm trying to decided if I should go ahead and make it accurate and ugly or if I should go for a more idealized version. What would you guys do in my place?

Depends on the supposed source of the piece in the show. If it was supposed to be super-refined work of high-tech culture or something then I might refine it.

But if there's a way to recreate the style of the original in an artful way, that would be better.

For instance, the little horse statuete from Black Stallion is very roughly sculpted, but I would want every dip and smear to be replicated in a replica because that's part of the look of the piece.

The other issue is: how did it come across in the film? That's always a good excuse for doing something a bit more refined than the actual prop.

The other issue is: who's the piece for? But then I suppose that's already answered by the fact you're asking the question publicly. ;)

Simple answer:

If you're doing it for someone else; get their opinion.

If you're doing it for yourself, ulitmately we can't answer for you.

But I'd do it as it was done in the film. :D

Here's the original. It isn't pretty. Usually, I'd be all for recreating it accuratly but this thing looks like it was sculpted using the tip of a pocket knife. I'm still not sure what to do...

Well if it's SUPPOSED to be an artifact of a primitive culture, I'd reproduce it as-is.

If it's supposed to be the recently-made product of a high-tech culture, I'd totally clean it up.

Is there a back story for the piece in the show?

No back story at all. Just a neat looking (at a distance) prop he wears. I'm guessing that it's suposed to be some current/near future type of medal. Maybe the damn thing got melted at some point and that's why it looks like that. Who knows? :lol Still haven't decided what I want to do though. In the film it looks really cool but up close it looks like crap. Dunno if I could be proud of making it 100% accurate :lol

I wonder if it's a found piece, like a replica Mayan xyz or something. I can't imagine even a rushed prop shop producing something that crude.

So I'm leaning towards reproducing it as-is. :confused :D

Why don't you sculpt up an idealized version, mold it, and then distress the sculpt to make it as it appeared on the show. If you make a second mold after distressing it you'll end up with a mold for each variety, yet only have to sculpt it once.

In One of the Firefly TV Episodes there was one named Jaynestown. Plot goes like this:

Serenity sets down at the mudder colony of Canton where it turns out Jayne is a hero for having dropped a bunch of money there years ago that he and his partner Stitch stole from the local magistrate. The drop was unintentional but Jayne doesn't turn down the attentions. Meanwhile, Kaylee and Simon dance, River rewrites Book's bible, and Inara beds the magistrate's son, a virgin.

Basically a Backwater planet with very few advanced technologies to pass around in the worker areas. Anyways. In the Episode He's Given a Few things by the People That worship him as a hero. I'll See if I can snag any pictures off my dvd set that can help.

That would be cool if you can spot it in that episode, I thought this was just from the movie. I think it should be the "ugly" version... all rugged and unrefined like. Thinking of making casts of it once your done?

Originally, I was just gonna make one for myself. I just couldn't decide how to do it but I've had a few people ask that same question so depending on how it turns out, I might. If I do, I'll let you guys know :)

Figured You need a small update on the possible screen grabs.
At this time I'm having a bit of a hard time finding the Box Set.
With things that are happening right now it may take a few days. Sorry if this has slowed you down at all.
