I have been working on this for a few days now! Just need to fill some small gaps, do a wash, maybe some drybrushing, and make a perti dish base for it!

THE THING is my favorite movie of all time, and I love the part where the blood monster jumps out of the petri dish.. Scared me to death the first time I saw it!!

Not much good ref for it, so I used a shot of the original prop, and another artists interpretation of it as a basis...

Sculpted with sculpey on a wire armature

Its a little hard to see due to the gloss finish and the light reflection.. Once it has a wash on it the detail should hopefully stand out a bit

I used some photos that an artist took of his rendition of it as well.. I assumed he sculpted it, or it was a painted garage kit, etc...
I saved those images on my hard drive.. I cant find the source online anymore, but Ill post them up later

I totally didnt know it had form either! I was doing research on a different prop (just a perti dish filled with "blood" and the word PALMER written on it.. ) I was looking for a good still to copy the handwriting from and all this stuff just showed up in the search!

I never noticed that either. Can you even see it in the film? That scene is so quick, it looks like the blood just jumps.

You cant see it at all in the film.. Im kind of shocked they put so much effort into it! Maybe they shot from different angles and could see it better, but chose the final version due to whatever reason?

That is very cool. I've seen this movie a dozen times and I always thought it was just blood jumping out of the dish, I wasn't aware it was supposed to have a monster form of any kind.

Interesting sculpture as well. Not a prop I would of thought of doing.

Funny - I have seen a similar one on e-bay but always thought it looked a little corny because the one in the film is just a blood shaped blob reacting - not with lips, teeth & arms. At least that is what it looks to me on pause. I always thought this design was some fan made one who just claimed it was from a screen used piece. When it lands on the floor it is just runny blood as well. I am not sure about that website description as that being screen used. But maybe I just missed something.

I keep trying to hit the right freeze frame on a youtube version of the scene. I can't nail it. Anyway, cool idea.
BTW they're gearing up to start shooting the prequel very soon.

Who knows really.... This might have been from a scene that was cut as well... Apparently that one I linked to was verified by a propmaker on the film as being the real deal...

I guess the only people that know for sure are the crew..

All you need is a petri dish to set this guy down in for display. I think this is very cool and a great idea. I wish there were more props for this movie other than the spider head we all have. This has always been one of my favorite films to watch. Especially in the winter months here in Ohio.... :eek
