My NEM Captain's Jacket project

I have finally decided to embark on my NEM Captain's Jacket. I am using Alex's pattern he and his wife make and sell. Alex is a member in good standing of many forums but most notably for me to the 1701st Costuming Club. Alex and his wife have a costuming company they started called Bad Wolf Costumes. They can also be found on Facebook under Bad Wolf Costumes. I am in no way affiliated with Alex's company nor with his products other than as an avid fan and consumer.

I will not go as in depth as my ENT Jumper thread because Alex's uniform pattern kit has all the instructions you could want. I will instead document my project and add my two cents when I feel like it may be warranted.

First the pattern. It looks superb; clean professional lines, well labeled with seam allowances marked. There is little to nothing left to interpretation as far as I can see. The full color step-by-step instructions come with a dissertation on the uniform and it's quirky variants as weell as some helpful tips on making the trousers. The instructions read clearly and simply and are often annotated with plenty of well timed humor. All in all I am very pleased with this (and the other) pattern set I've gotten from Alex and his wife. (BTW - their division shirt pattern form NEM/VOY/ENT just came out.)

Last night I got all the pattern pieces traced out in the size I chose with materials gathered for my first test fit jacket which I am making strait from the pattern with no alterations. I am using some left-over black poly twill I had for the jacket body and I found a poly-something-or-other I had laying around that looks suspiciously good & dark gray for the yoke. I have some other cotton scraps I will be using for the muslin interfacing and the various notions.

Once I get the pattern worked out the final jacket will be made from more appropriate materials.

Here is an image of the night's tracing and gathering of supplies. Sorry for the quality, it was a cell phone pic before packing it in for the night. More to come with a better camera.

Nice! Not enough Star Trek threads here. I am also planning to start a NEM jacket, and found Alex's pattern yesterday. I read through the research and instructions and the PDF looks superb. Unfortunately, I decided last minute, and although I wanted to buy this pattern, Bad Wolf can't ship fast enough for me, so I'm going to use their research and draft my own pattern.

Can't wait to see how yours turns out! What are you planning to wear for the pants and division shirt? Did you also buy the division shirt pattern you linked?

I will be making my own division shirt and pants as well as the jacket. I already made my own pattern for the division shirt, but I want to give Alex's a try as well so yes, I do have a copy of it on the way. I have some working patterns I used for my Voyager jump suits that I plan to use as a base for some 8-panel pants for my NEM jacket.

Though they need a good pressing, here are some shots of my VOY jumpers. Their patterns are the ones I hope to use to make the NEM pants.

Their construction was kind of documented starting on post #71 of this 1701st thread.

Had some scheduling issues, but managed to do a little bit. I got the yoke material cut out of my wool gab. Yes it needs a good ironing.

Well, life kicked my ***** this last month and I finally got to work on this last night. I got one shoulder point done and was well into the second when my old White 4040 finally left this world for good. I'd had her for over 10 years now, through two repairs and too many projects to recount here. So now I go shopping for a new one and this project is on hold until I do.

I may assemble the lining with my serger though...

Got my new machine out and the tensions all figured out last night. Got the other shoulder point finished before lights-out. the way this thing moves, I realize I'd been struggling with a failing machine for a few years now. I feel like I could fly through this project with this machine.
